Want to use simple tabs on wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

I have the wordpress.com blog, not hosted, and so no plugins. After reading some support forum posts, I thought I’d ask how to do what I want to accomplish rather than assuming that plugins are the only way.

I want a simple pair of tabs within a post, specifically, on one tab the content would be a googlemap (which I have used successfully already) and on the second tab would be a JPG of an old map showing the same area with a link from that image.

Is there a way to use simple tabs on wordpress.com?

    Cheers
    Morag

Tabs? You create links in post and pages.

This is the guide for creating links in posts and pages: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/

This is the general link model:
    <a href="URL HERE">Highlighted anchor text here</a>
This is the visual result – it’s not actually linked here in the forum.
    Highlighted anchor text here

    1. Enter the relevant descriptive anchor text you want to link to first. Note that “here” is not a good choice.
    2. Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text. (If you don’t highlight the anchor text the chain icon will remain grayed out and not be useable.)
    3. Next click the chain icon in the editor and proceed to create the link.

Thank you for the explanation on how to use links. However, I was asking about tabs. Do you have any information about that? I don’t want the tabs to be links to other webpages (aka CSS tabs), I want them to be all inline (aka javascript tabs). Since you can’t use javascript, other people have developed tabs plugins, including one with a shortcode [tabs]. However, since I can’t use plugins, my questions was whether there was another way I could get tabs.

We bloggers cannot use any JavaScript on WordPress.COM hosted blogs for security reasons. Please read:

I’m sorry I haven’t been articulating myself clearly in asking my question.

I know I can’t use javascript which is why I’m asking my question. If I could use JavaScript I would just get on and do that :-)

I am asking my question because I have a wordpress.com blog. I know if I went the hosted route I could use a tabs plugin of which there appear to be quite a few.

My question remains, can I do this on a wordpress.com blog. If the answer is “No” then please do tell me, as that is the information I am seeking. It will save me fruitlessly searching any further. I reviewed the list of shortcodes before asking my question and couldn’t see anything that would solve my problem. You have pointed me at it in your answer, does this mean you think there is something there I could use? If so, could you be a little more explicit about which one?

Many Thanks for trying to answer my question and apologies again for it not being clear at the start.

The answer is No. You cannot add tabs within a WordPress.com blog. You couldn’t even emulate tabs, as using links would by definition send you to another place rather than changing the contents of the post you’re looking at. You could use an image to make fake tabs, put that in via the Custom Design upgrade, and link them to different posts, but that is still not tabs.

I got close but was scuppered by not being able to use pseudo attributes of CSS in an inline style tag, and thus couldn’t use :target and z-order. Shame so close. Needs a wordpress shortcode methinks.

Thanks for the confirmation. It is what I feared.

P.S. I wasn’t trying to use tabs for navigation, just FYI, so links weren’t the issue. I was just trying to use it to have two pictures in the same location on the page, which you could switch between.
