Wanting Fullscreen/Widescreen View

  Hi, I am new to WP so please bear with me. I have searched the Help topics here and also Googled my problem but can’t seem to find what I’m looking for. I have uploaded numerous themese which all appear to be fullscreen/widescreen when I preview them online. However, when I upload and activate them, they all appear in that typical WP format, using only one third (or less) of the screen in a column in the middle with loads of wasted space either side. It seems like such a waste of space. I would like my content to stretch to the edges of the widescreen. I see website that appear this way, but don’t know how to achieve it. If someone could advise I would be most greatful as I am an absolute beginner. Thanks :)
