Wanting Portrait Oriented 'thumbnail photos' and 'featured images'

  Hello,

  Whenever I try to upload a photo that is portrait oriented as the ‘featured image’ in my post to be shown on the HOME page as the ‘post thumbnail’ the photo gets edited into a landscape oriented photo. I can’t seem to figure out how to stop this from happening. I would love to have any information you might provide.
