Wanting to confirm which is the best plan for upgrading site

  • Unknown's avatar

Presently our website is hosted elsewhere and I want to change the website as well as change the hosting. Our company website is rvbcurrency.com. I don’t know what the best way we should move forward and would like some help. For example, should I get wordpress to host it? What is the difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com?

I would like to have as much functionality as possible and have the ability to code.

I would also like to have the ability for clients and staff to log in for information on the site.

I would be grateful for your help

  • Hi there,

What is the difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com?

The support document on WordPress.com has this article on the differences between these two: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

To explain it in layman terms, a site on WordPress.com is like renting a house. You can decorate your house and put furniture in it, depending on how much rent you’re paying.

On the other hand, a self-hosted WordPress site is like you build a house on top of your rented land (web hosting + domain fee). You can do whatever you like with the house like renovating it, adding extra rooms to it, etc.

Also, WordPress.com is a service providing web hosting to host your WordPress site and WordPress.org is a large community providing the open source WordPress software. So WordPress.org is not a web hosting company.

I would like to have as much functionality as possible and have the ability to code.

With a Business Plan on WordPress.com, you’re able to install plugins and custom themes. But you’re not able to modify the WordPress files directly. WordPress.com does not provide FTP access to your site as well.

So if you’re thinking on fully customize your site by editing the PHP files, self-hosted WordPress is a better option.

I would also like to have the ability for clients and staff to log in for information on the site.

Depending on the complexity of your requirement, both WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress provides different user roles with associated rights to it.

However, to extend the functionality of the user roles, you may need a plugin for that. Let’s say having a membership-only content area for clients who are subscribed to your service/plans, you definitely need a membership plugin.

Do let us know if you have further questions, we’ll be glad to help.
