  • Unknown's avatar

    My domain is http://beverlymcleod.com/

It is hosted on http://www.nhk-hosting.com because i needed more freedom to use WordPress for my business.

I went to my site and it gives me this

Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Please log in and go to the Domains Upgrades page of your blog to use this domain.

My host tells me that my dns is WordPress.com and .wordpress.com where it should be pointing at NHK-Hosting.

    I HAVE Not changed that.

I don’t want to use you as my host, I want to keep the domain i purchased and use the host I am setup with.

Can you help me with this

    Thank You
    Beverly McLeod.

    Hi Beverly!

Quick question. Are you currently on a paid WordPress.com plan? In order to use your existing domain name, you will need to upgrade to a paid plan.

No FREE, I don’t want ANY PLAN with WordPress. I want the domain i bought to go to my own self hosted account away from wordpress.com

Thanks for the information, Beverly. As far as I know, you are only able to map your domain if you are on an upgraded WordPress.com plan.

I’m going to tag a moderator just to be sure, but it sounds like you might need to migrate your site to your new host.

    Hi

The site is on the new host, has been for a while. DNS was set. The domain name I believe was bought on May 24, 2016 that would mean if i paid a year then it would be expired now, so who or where does the domain name get registered, i want to use my name domain still as i want to keep it.

Does WordPress become the registrar or can i use someone else to re register it?

    Hi Beverly,
If your domain is with WordPress.com, to use it on an external host you need to change some settings in your WordPress account. Have a look at this page:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-subdomain/#scenario4 .

    Hope this helps!

    Hi

Thanks, i read all of that. I think it has expired and that is why it showed up. I didn’t setup autorenew and just found that it has ran out.

I’ve read ONLY wordpress.com can send me a renewal link for my domain then i can have it set again.

I just want the domain name, NOT the hosting etc.

    Hi Beverley,

Your domain expired back on May 24th, and is currently in it’s ‘redemption period’. It’s possible for you to redeem this domain, but there’s typically a fee. The staff here have been notified, and they’ll be able to help you out with that.

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually, just reading up, it may be beyond the redemption period. Once the domain passes the redemption period, it can take anywhere from a couple of weeks, to a year before the domain is made available again.

Oh that’s a bummer. I’m sure the staff will help as best they can. Good luck!

  • Hi there,

That domain has already been removed from our system and is currently in redemption with our registrar. It is still possible for me to recover the domain at this point, but our registrar charges a $80 fee to restore a domain from redemption. Let me know if you agree to that fee and I can get the recovery process started.

    @joerepublic

Based on what are you saying this? A domain’s status regarding redemption is shown in the Whois data. There’s no guesswork involved.

Once the domain passes the redemption period, it can take anywhere from a couple of weeks, to a year before the domain is made available again.

You are confusing expired domains with cancelled domains. Expired domains go through a specific process which takes around 80 days, and then they are released at which point anyone can register them again.

    Domain Expiration

With cancelled domains it depends on the type of domain, where in its lifecycle it was cancelled, and the policies of the applicable registrar, how long it takes before the domain is released again.

So IF I buy the domain again from WordPress, I can just use them as a Registrar and NOT as a HOST. I can setup my DNS to my chosen hosting?

    That’s correct.

Excellent. Lesson learned. Setup AUTO RENEW and READ EMAILS

  • Should I get the recovery process started then? Or are you rather going to register a new domain instead of redeeming the expired one?

If you want to rather register a new domain, you can register it at https://wordpress.com/domains

To use a domain with a WordPress.com site you need to purchase a paid plan as well, but at the link above you can buy only a domain if you intend to use it elsewhere.

    Hi

Thanks for all your help and support. I think i am just going to let it go and move on.

    So I will leave it.

    Thank You
    Beverly McLeod

  • No problem.

If the domain sticks to the standard timeline that domain should be released again in about a month from now, at which point you might be able to register it again as a new domain. We should also be able to still recover it for at least the next two weeks, still, in case you change your mind.
