Warped Images in Tiled Galleries Suddenly…
-
Hello,
I have made no recent changes to my site but all of a sudden tiled gallery images are loading warped and skewed.
I’ve checked in multiple browsers, Chrome, Safari and Firefox on iOS and Mac OS the issue is the same.
Especially when loading a tiled gallery page at smaller than full width, where the page has to respond to the browser width, the images intermittently load heavily skewed and will even maintain the skew when resizing the browser.

Update:
I changed every gallery to square to try and get around this – but no dice – still happening. Actually square demonstrates the problem even more pronounced.
Reload the page a few times and most of the images correct themselves but visit the page again and it repeats.
This was not happening in these galleries until this week.

Update 2:
I only had 3 lines of custom CSS targeting tiled-galleries, only applying to the width of the entire gallery and the gallery rows.
I stripped this out (even though it has been no problem until now).
I now have no CSS targeting tiled galleries, cleared caches, still happening.
Lines of CSS stripped below:
.tiled-gallery .gallery-row {
margin: 0 auto;
width: 100%;
}.tiled-gallery {
margin: 0 auto;
width: 100%;
}.gallery-row {
margin: auto;
width: 100%;

One last update and I’ll wait for MOD reply.
I’m not sure how WordPress handles image loading, but the “low quality” versions of the images that show up initially appear to be warped then when fully loaded the image corrects.
I’ve now tried this from 3 different networks in 3 different locations to eliminate any possibility of that being a factor.

Hi there,
We are aware of the problem. It looks like a recent change in the code that controls galleries might be at fault. Our developers are working on a fix.
Can you please confirm exactly the browsers with their version numbers where this is happening for you? So far we’ve only had reports of this happening in Safari on iOS and Mac OS X. Your galleries look fine for me in Firefox 52 on Mac OS X.

Thanks @kokkieh,
Good to know I’m not crazy, at least not about this. :)
First, I have tried many browsers and it happens in all, I will list.
Second, it does not appear to happen at full width, only at responsive sizes below 100%. My site is 1230px but 100% responsive, on a full OS reduce your browser window down to 1/3 of the screen. DO this BEFORE you visit a gallery page then click into one.
I JUST did this in Chrome 56 on OS X and it is still happening. I’ve seen something similar before when I tried to target the <img> inside .tiled-gallery-item with CSS long ago, but it seems almost impossible to override gallery item properties with CSS.
In almost all cases the initial load is warped and if you expand the window to full screen they will even stay warped until you reload.
Reload at any point and most will display correctly, but often some are still warped.
On OS X:
Chrome 56.0.2924.87 (64-bit)
Safari 9.0.3 (11601.4.4)
Firefox 52 (64-bit)On iOS 10.2.1:
All the latest versions of Chrome. Safari, Firefox.
On Windows 7:
The latest version of Chrome

Thank you for all this information. I’m not able to reproduce the issue at all – your galleries load normally for me no matter the screen size – so there might be other factors in play as well. With the number of reports we’ve received we should be able to figure out the common factors, though.
I’ll let you know if we need any more information, or if there’s any progress in fixing this.

This should be fixed now. Can you please clear the browser cache in all your browsers/devices and check if this is still happening for you?
If you still see the distortion, please let me know again in which browsers/operating systems is it’s different from before.

I’m sorry but if anything the problem is worse now.
Here is a screen recording of what I’m seeing as of 2:30am 3/18/2017.
https://flic.kr/p/RLgCn7
(Takes a few seconds to become playable, best viewed full screen)As you can see sometimes all images load warped, sometimes only some and sometimes they load clean and then warp AFTER they are loaded (see this near the end of the video).
I’ve cleared all data in 3 browsers multiple times and tried.
The video is Chrome 57.0.2987.100 on iOS 10.2.1 but the same thing happens in the latest versions of Safari and Firefox on on iOS 10.2.1.
Hope this helps.

P.S. I know the video says “9:41 am” but apparently when you plug in an iPhone to do an iPhone capture in Quicktime it changes the clock to to read “9:41 am” no matter what time it is. Apple’s little joke carried over from their marketing.
It is 2:30 am 3/18/2017.

Thanks for checking, and for the video. I’m now able to also see it on your site in the mobile view, so it’s definitely not fixed. I’ve let the developer working on this know.

I’m having the same issues with stretched photos, I’ve already posted about it on the forum and I think someone is looking into it, we’re definitely not the only ones experiencing this problem.
-
FYI, it appears that this could be Javascript related.
When I disable Javascript in the advanced settings of Safari on iOS, tiled galleries load like a champ.
Far to big of course and it breaks many other things, but still…

Still working on it. Our developers are still trying to track down the exact cause. Once they do, they should be able to fix it.
