We are building a website for a client and need advice

    Hi,

We are a group of three friends starting a web design business. We have our first client, and are designing their website for them. In order for the client to have access to the back-end once they have bought our design, would it be best if we created an entirely separate WordPress account for the client? Or will we be able to design their website on our business’ WordPress account, and transfer it to theirs somehow?

Tl;dr what is the best practice for selling web designs via WordPress when it comes to WordPress accounts?

  • Hi @webmedesigners, the best practice depends on what you intend for your relationship with the client after the site is done.

Personally if I were creating sites here, I would:
    – Create the site and design using a paid plan
    – After the client pays for my work and the plan price, transfer the upgrade and site ownership to them (here’s how)

In that process, they will be in charge of paying for upgrades going forward. You can also transfer a domain to them if you registered it for them, or they can add their paid domain at that point.

You’ll also be able to opt whether to stay on the site as an administrator. Note the user can remove you if they want to, as they are the site admin.

I would use that option personally because it gives the client ownership of the site after they’ve paid for it. They’ll also be able to log in and get direct support if needed, if they’re on a paid plan.

Other designers might choose to retain ownership, depending on how their contracts are set up. Just be sure to transfer ownership if you ever decide you want out of that client/contractor relationship.

    Does that help?
