When I enter information into the right hand side panel via the widgets I get ‘We cannot load blog data at this time.’ Why is this please?

I’ve never herd of that error message. Exactly which site is that happening on and what is the URL of the page?
Will you provide a screenshot for Staff please? I’ll tag this thread for their attention. You can use http://snag.gy/ to share screenshots and link to them here. If you use the WordPress.com guide for screenshots http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ you can and upload it to your Media Library, and return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it.

Can you enter a URL in the Blog URL field? Instructions for setting up that widget can be found here:

Hi, Jeremy, in my usual manner of trial and error I have managed to set the page up as I want. It is likely that there was a temporary system fault which corrected itself. Many thanks for your input.
