We have a domain name on godaddy, do you charge to transfer

We have a domain name on godaddy doggiediggs.com. We currently forward it to https://doggiediggs.wordpress.com. We don’t want people to see the subdomain anymore. We want people to see DoggieDiggs.com in the web browser so it looks more professional. We don’t want the web site to be interrupted with down time during transfer. We want the traffic stats to continue uninterrupted. Do you charge to transfer?

    Self-declared URL: doggiediggs.com

  • Hi there! Typically there is a fee for transferring a domain that would be the equivalent of buying an additional year for your registration. For example, your domain “doggiediggs.com” would last until April 2035 after transfer, instead of the current duration of 2034.

However, this fee is waived if you purchase an annual WordPress.com plan upgrade, which gives you a free domain credit that you can use to claim a new domain registration — or in this case, a domain transfer. Additionally, you’ll want to upgrade to an active plan to set this domain as your primary address (the domain that appears in your site’s address bar).

I would recommend upgrading your website to an annual Starter plan first, and then use the free domain credit to complete your domain transfer.

Thanks will the transfer cause any interruption in the web site being viewable on the web, or traffic statistics?

  • Transferring the domain should not cause site downtime as the site has a separate primary address at the moment (doggiediggs.wordpress.com). Traffic statistics shouldn’t be affected either since the site will still be accessible at the primary address during the domain transfer process.

However you will want to ensure the doggiediggs.com domain is pointing to WordPress.com after the transfer to ensure traffic to this address continues to be redirected to doggiediggs.wordpress.com (before you update the primary address).

    To proceed:

    1. Click this link to initiate the doggiediggs.com domain transfer, select a WordPress.com plan and complete the purchase.
    2. Update the domain name servers at GoDaddy to point the domain to WordPress.com.

If you’re having difficulty unlocking the domain for transfer or getting the authorization code, refer to this guide: https://ie.godaddy.com/help/transfer-my-domain-away-from-godaddy-3560

After the transfer is completed, you will be able to assign doggiediggs.com as the site’s new primary address using this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/set-a-primary-address/
