We paid a company to create a website
-
They made a website for us using WordPress, but they are charging us a separate hosting fee on their server. How difficult is it for us to move the website to WordPress business package? Is there a fee? How is it done?

Hi there,
That company who created your website used the self-hosted version of WordPress, called WordPress.org. You do need to pay for hosting to use that version of WordPress if you don’t want to run your own server, so that company is not doing anything underhanded by charging you money. That’s how WordPress hosting works.
Before moving your site to WordPress.com you need to know that there are some very important differences between us and the version of WordPress you’re using now.
WordPress.org is free software that anyone can use for anything they want to. The only limits are those imposed by your host. WordPress.com on the other hand is a hosting platform, and our terms of service prohibit certain types of content, including that we don’t allow outside advertising on sites here. Additionally, you can’t use custom themes or plugins here. The paid plans add some extra feature to your free site, but you won’t be able to use the same theme your site is using now, and you’re limited in the ways you can customize it.
The Business Plan costs $299 a year. You can see everything included in that price here:

To move here you need to export your content from the self-hosted site and import it here. To be clear, you can ONLY move your posts, pages and media files. Not your theme, settings, database, or plugins on the other site. Those are not compatible with WordPress.com and cannot be imported here.
You can see our guide for doing this here:
