We should be able to delete unwanted followers!
-
Hello, I am getting obvious spam-followers (the latest is colombiancuties.wordpress.com, which OBVIOUSLY doesn’t care about the content of my site!), and have found that there is no way to delete such people from the followers-list.
I also have one or two other followers who I’ve already determined are following my blog simply in order to either (a) steal the content, or (b) bash the content. Yes, I realize that since anybody can access my public blog, they’ll always be able to access its content even if they aren’t followers… but do I REALLY have to have my work specially delivered right into their inbox every time I post something? It’s almost like handing your abuser a weapon to hit you with…
Technically, there surely has to be a way to give bloggers this option?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

(a) steal the content
See here for how to proceed when content theft is an issue. http://en.support.wordpress.com/content-theft-what-to-do/
See here for preventing it http://en.support.wordpress.com/prevent-content-theft/(b) bash the content
Note that you have complete control comment moderation. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation If your blog is public others can, of course, read it and they can submit comments but you can Moderate all comments and choose which ones to approve or not.
I suggest you set your blog so that first time commenters are held in moderation until their first comment is approved, then from that point forward they will not need approval. Settings > Discussion. The next step up is to set it so that all comments are held in moderation until approved. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/
For trolls, you can “blacklist” them at Settings > Discussion toward the bottom of that page. Enter their email address, their username, and if they included it, their website URL. That will automatically send them to moderation so that their comments do not appear on the blog. Do note though that if they are determined, they can use a different email address or username to get around that.
Also, do not put their IP address in the blacklist. IP addresses are no longer unique, and you might end up blocking legitimate visitors. Also, all they would have to do is go to a wi-fi hot spot, or connect via a different ISP and they could get around that.

Can somebody please respond to my actual question?
I asked about deleting FOLLOWERS. Not about comments. There are no comments on my site.
Thank you.

Brilliant! Someone else already posted the same problem in the Support section last month… and WordPress staff told him that it should be posted in Ideas.

This is right out of a Kafka novel!

We cannot block or delete subscribers from public blogs. However, please read this about public blogs that become private blogs > Blog Privacy and Subscribers > http://wpcommaven.wordpress.com/2011/09/05/blog-privacy-and-subscribers/

Unlike theother Support Forums, this Ideas Forum is one were we users float trial balloons (ideas and suggestions)for Staff to picky and choosy from. What is posted here is rarely ever acted upon. I have been here for 8 years and I would not hold my breath waiting for the ability to be able to block any followers from a public blog. This is why https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/delete-or-block-followers

I have gotten two (can’t remember the exact count) or so small changes past the Ideas forum – small changes I admit – but one I use every day! (the date showing when you look at the stats for a week – used to be week number) – so it does happen once in a while
The delete followers is ask for at least every other day – and as long as your blog is open it will do no good – and people can still grab the RSS feed and there is no way anyone can touch that as long as they use a non-WordPress.com reader
-
Actually, I saw a staff member delete an unwanted follower the other day, so I suggest we just Modlook these threads until staff either provides a way for bloggers to do it themselves or stops doing that. It’s not fair to do it for some but not all.

Exactly! Blocking would be a useless exercise because- Anyone can get a new IP in a couple of minutes.
- Anyone can get a new email address in a couple of minutes.
- Anyone with internet access can subscribe to any public blog in a feedreader.
- Anyone with internet access can read any public blog.
-
I am actually a bit mixed on this – another blog I admin for friends needed to have a couple of people deleted from subscribe list (the subscribers request) and I had to send them long detailed instructions on how to click on the correct link – on the other hand I would not like to be deleted from a list just because someone did not like boaters – so in a way there is no way to keep everyone happy on this one

I do not think it would be entirely useless. I could be off base, but say I had the ability to remove what is obviously a spam follower- one interested in me visiting their site and/or following, nothing more. Does that necessarily mean they will take the time to follow again, if they were removed? Would they even know they are no longer following you?
Xanga bloggers are moving over here and one of the features they had was blocking users from reading your public blog. These folk might be wanting that same ability. It is easier to block the unwanteds than to have non WP users figure out how to create an account to follow a private blog. It is what has kept me from making one here. I have friends and family that do not want to figure that out.
If someone is continually changing email addresses just to follow a blog where they are not wanted, wouldn’t that be a form of harassment?
These are just some things I think about when someone asks for the ability to remove followers.
