We still have the domain, just no host, so where is our website?!?!

Your online FAQ’s and forums, and your “Happiness Engineers” cannot tell me how to fix this problem!!! I let our bluehost hosting expire one year ago when the renewal notice went to our spam folder. I was told by bluehost that our website data had been deleted. Since the website was built using WordPress, I feel I should be able to get the website data back without rebuilding the site, but if I am taking the right path on your God forsaken website, I have the bill up to $300 SO FAR. Would anyone like to respond to me and just tell me if our website can be recovered?

Hello there,

I am so sorry to hear about the website you lost. I can imagine how frustrating this can be.
Website files or backups are stored on the hosting provider’s server. I realized how confusing this can be. While WordPress.com and Bluehost are two separate hosting companies, we don’t have a copy of your website files from another hosting provider.
When a hosting service expires, the hosting provider may keep a backup of your website for a limited time. In WordPress.com, we store backups for up to 30 days. If our user returns and renews their hosting within 30 days, we can restore the site. After 30 days, the website is already considered completely deleted and can no longer be restored.
It may have a different timeframe with Bluehost, though if they said it was already deleted, it means it can no longer be restored.
I understand how disappointing this is. You may want to consider starting a new website on WordPress.com instead. https://wordpress.com/hosting/
We also offer web design services if you are considering having someone build the website for you. https://wordpress.com/support/website-design-service/

Thank you for your reply. I just want to make sure I understand: Though WordPress was used to create the site, WordPress doesn’t keep anything on file if another server is used?

That is correct! WordPress is only a platform used to create websites. It’s like a file installed in the hosting server. Consider it like materials used in building houses. Your content or files are not saved in the materials used but in the place where you built the website, which is your hosting server.
I realize there’s also confusion on WordPress and WordPress.com. WordPress.com is a hosting provider for WordPress websites. It’s not a support for all WordPress sites, but only those hosted by WordPress.com.
