"We were unable to process this media item"

Hi, I don’t know if this is a problem with the theme or wider WordPress, but I suspect not the latter because surely it would have been widely reported and fixed by now (it’s been a couple of weeks, I think).

I uploaded some pictures and then tried cropping them. I went through the Media menu as usual, clicked on the thumbnail, pressed edit image, and then manipulated the crop as I have always done.

Then… nothing happens. The image just reverts to its original uploaded shape and size, and I get the message: “We were unable to process this media item”

Tried reloading pics, re-saving pics in photo software and uploading the new versions, tried both jpg and png. Nothing works. Then I checked older files I had previously uploaded and cropped without a problem, and this affects them too. i.e. I can’t crop existing library items either, not just new uploads.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you

  • Hi,

Was there anything unique about the newer images? Were they particularly large? Or were they a different image format (apple heic for example)?

I have exactly the same problem (and I don’t know when I got it, because I have not tried to do it for a very long time). Theme i use is Cerauno, and my blog is https://larsrisan.net/

I have tried several images. Small and lagre crops, seems that I get this error no matter what I do. JPG-fromat. It does the job, but I am unable to save the editied image.

Hope there is a solution somewhere!

  • Hm, that should be working.

First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/

If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.

If it is, please do these two things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.

    2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

I am also having this exact same issue. I’ve done all the things mentioned above and it’s still giving the error. I’m using google chrome. I also tried in a different browser, same thing happened.

I’m new and am just trying to pop out a few blog post drafts for a job application. It’s very annoying I can’t do any basics edits on normal jpeg images I uploaded myself. The edit window opens and it lets me rotate and crop images, but then they don’t save and I get the error message.

Also, I tried editing the stock photos provided by wordpress, same error happens.

  • Hi everyone,

This is a bug, and it has already been reported to our developers. We’ll let you know here once this is fixed.

But for now you’ll need to make any edits you want to your image before you upload it. This is better in general in any case – when you edit images in the library, both the edit and the original is stored, meaning you end up using double the amount of storage space for each image than you would have used if you just uploaded the edited image to start with.

For simple edits like cropping or resizing you can use the built-in photo viewing apps on Windows and Mac, you can use an online tool like https://pixlr.com/, or you can install the free photo editor, GIMP, so you don’t need expensive tools like Lightroom or Photoshop for this :)

Macmanx: I tried Firefox, that I haven’t used on wordpresss.com for a couple of years. Same problem.

Yes, kokkieh, I will use Gimp, but it is faster and easier to use the built in functionality when I need to experiment with how much to crop.

Thanks to both of you, I hope the bug will be fixed! :-)

Thanks for the update, kokkieh. I keenly await news of a fix. And thanks to everyone else too – glad to know it’s not just me!

Yes I’m also having the same issue. With my photos they are the correct direction on my computer but once I upload them they swap directions in WordPress and that’s when I can’t edit them.
Strangely last week I discovered it must only be photos that I take with my camera that I get the issue with. If I have used photos I have sent from my phone to messenger and saved the photos to my computer from there I’m not getting the issue

Im having the same issue and and i’m sure it is WordPress server issue. Hope you fix it soon. Thank you.

  • For those having this issue, you can keep an eye on its progress here: https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/61297

While we don’t have a timeline for a resolution, I suggest using my colleague’s suggestion above.

    Hi all,

I’m also having the same issue with both my sites http://writerinahat.com and http://artistinahat.com which have different themes, Maisha and Photos, respectively. It effects photos uploaded from my iphone and pexels photos. I first noticed the issue around mid February, if that helps any.

Thank you all who are working hard on this

Yes, I’m having the same issue with my images and they are not cropping like i’m trying to do.

  • @iemmapaul, just in case this is a different issue from the one in the original post, could you start a new topic here?
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

You can add a “modlook” tag if you’d like to get staff attention.

That way the people who have been working on this topic won’t get unwanted notifications as we troubleshoot your issue. Even though it appears to be the same issue it could have a different underlying cause. Keeping your thread separate from this one helps us to tailor our answers to your specific issue, thanks!
