Web address linked to closed account – help!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi – A few years ago I decided I needed a website. Then life got busy. So, now I want to finally build a website. When I tried to log into WordPress I got error messages like ‘account closed’ or ‘account deleted’ for the username I selected previously. So, I set up a new account, figuring that I can just start from scratch and see whether or not I’m going to invest the time in learning WordPress. So far, so good, But when I tried to link my domain name to get started using WordPress I got an error stating: ‘This site is linked to another WordPress.com account. If you’re trying to access it, please follow our Account Recovery procedure.’ So I tried that but I don’t have any of the information to prove that I had that account (I think I had just started it but hadn’t paid anything, and there is nothing on my credit card bill from the time I would have started trying to use WordPress. And, since I don’t have a paid account I cannot get any contact info for anyone at WordPress to help me figure this out. Any advice on what to do, or how to get in touch with an actual human at WordPress?

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

What is the URL of your site?

    Hi there!

Can you let us know the URL of the site and your domain name? Once we have that information, we’ll be better able to advise.

    Thank you!

    Thanks!!

    The site is drkathleentaylor.com

Sadly, I’m such a novice that I don’t know what the difference is between a domain name and the URL (but am going to learn…a lot! If it helps, I registered it through Namecheap.

    Hi,

Your website url is hosted on Namecheap and uses wordpress software. Which means, You should head over to WordPress.org forums.
    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    wordpress.com is managed hosting.
wordpress.org is self hosting with domain purchased from domain hosting provider.
    This is the difference below.
    https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi there, yes that is correct. Your site was not hosted here at WordPress.com. Instead, it was a site using the software from https://wordpress.org/ and hosted with NameCheap.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/ and your site was not using our backup product https://jetpack.com/upgrade/backup/ we are not able to assist with this.

In this case, I recommend contacting your former hosting provider to ask if they still have a backup of your account with them: https://www.namecheap.com/help-center/

If not, you’re welcome to start over with us at https://wordpress.com/start

Thank you to all who have replied. But here’s the problem. I tried creating an account on WordPress.com. To get started I entered the domain name. I got an error message: This domain is already mapped to a WordPress.com site.

Except I cannot access the WordPress.com account that is using that domain name.

Do I have to pay for a WordPress.com account to get this fixed?

PS – I never actually built a site previously. I started to fiddle around, then walked away from it when life got too busy.

And, than k you for your support !! :)

  • Hi there,

I tried creating an account on WordPress.com. To get started I entered the domain name. I got an error message: This domain is already mapped to a WordPress.com site.

I do not see any upgrades under your @ktaylor170 WordPress.com account when I check on our end. You can confirm by visiting this page: https://wordpress.com/me/purchases/.

Is it possible you made your purchase under a different login? I can confirm that drkathleentaylor.com is registered at WordPress.com but is under a different account and not your @ktaylor170 login.

If you do not recall how to log in to your other account you can fill out the form here to get assistance from our Account Recovery team: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=recovery

On that form you will be asked to provide a transaction ID for your purchase, which you can typically find on your credit card statement. More info on how to find that here: https://wordpress.com/support/billing-history/#retrieving-a-transaction-id

As well I see that the upgrade in our system renewed on 01-27-2022 so you may wish to look through your recent credit card statements to see if you have a transaction from around that time. If you do not have a transaction ID you can enter a series of random numbers and that will allow you to proceed with sending the form.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
