  Can I add my own web domain to my wordpress site?

  Hi there,

  You sure can. If you already own a domain, you will need to set up domain mapping on your WordPress.com site.
  You can also register a new custom domain by purchasing an upgraded WordPress.com plan.
  Both options require a paid upgrade. All of the paid plans come with a domain token that can be used to register a new custom domain, or for domain mapping.

  To make sure I understand the response; I can take and create a WordPress Business site using e.g. start.wordpress.com.
  After the site is created and set up as start.wordpress.com, I can take the domain name from my existing website e.g. existingdomain.com and have a DNS Record update done to point to start.wordpress.com.
  Saying all this, preventing downtime to our website while we are creating the new one.
  I also understand additional steps are necessary for the mail server.

  Yes. As long as you follow these steps.

  I really can’t speak for site downtime. I know that it can take some time (few hours) for the DNS to propagate.

  2nd question, is it best to buy the domain.com separately or using the wordpress token, thinking incase I move will it be difficult to take with me?

  Taking a domain that you already own to another hosting company won’t be difficult. So if you don’t already own a custom domain, I’d use that token and register your custom domain at WordPress.com. If you already own a domain from another hosting company, use the token to set up domain mapping for your WordPress.com site.
