Web hooks – non techie here please explain

I read about web hooks on one of your web pages and noticed all the hype.

I apologise, but I dont quite understand:

    a) what they are
    b)how the hell they work
c)why I should implement them and what good they would do.

Please explain my above questions in as much detail using little jargon. I m not exactly a programmer. :D Thanks !!

This is what the support documentation states in part:

This is a feature aimed for developers who want to get data from actions (like when a new comment is submitted) that occur on a blog. … What would I use something like this for? Read more here. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/webhooks/

I still dont get it. I have read that page already and it makes no sense.

  • Webhooks as a feature is designed for techies. They allow WordPress.com to send a notice to an external service when you perform certain actions, such as publish a post.

If you don’t have an external service or can write one that uses them, I’m afraid you won’t find much use out of webhooks.
