  The domain from the site I created on WordPress expired, and I would like to speak with someone about my web hosting history, and a potential backup file.

  Domain mapping results in only the URL changing .The content remains exactly where it is when domains expire. Please read https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/

  Thank you, timethief.
  So, I have bought (or, rented) back my site from melborneit.com (the company that bought my expired site), and now I would love to recreate my site on the web.
  What is the best action plan for me? Should I first hire a web hosting company, and then have them access my wordpress site?

  All wordpress.com blogs are on .wordpress.com subdomains.
  WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible.

  If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog, and as you own a domain URL already, you can see here for mapping an existing domain. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

  Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it, and also renew the domain mapping purchase here, each and every year.

  Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium upgrade bundle.

  In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL. If you do not register a .wordpress.com blog URL first then the software supplies the dot whatever URL so you can proceed with your domain mapping purchase.
