Web Hosting Advice, What do I need?

    I have had great times with WordPress.com but looking to host elsewhere. I am wondering what do people recommend? I am running a humor/parody WordPress-oriented web blog with traffic of 500,000 monthly.

    We have hosting recommendations here if you’re interested in those:
    http://get.wp.com/hosting/

    It’s also nice to have recommendations from other people about hosting. :)

    I’ve used Bluehost for a long time and haven’t had very many troubles. I have also heard good things about MediaTemple.

    Since your question is really WordPress.org-related, you may want to check in at the http://wordpress.org/support/ forums which were created specifically for self-hosted WordPress.org blogs.

    Not really, I am currently a wordpress.com member but looking to,
    ahem, move on. If I have large traffic, like 250,000 per month, will I need a dedicated server?

    @dillionashley3,

    You will need to talk with the web hosts and see what their recommendations are for your expected traffic. It might be best to go with a virtual server with that many hits per month rather than with a shared hosting. With some hosts, they might be able to handle your blog with shared hosting, but of course you will need a good bit of available bandwidth for that many hits. Some hosts load up their shared hosting servers quite heavily while some do not.

    I’ve been using A Small Orange hosting for over a year and have had good luck with them and have also recommended them to several of my clients who have had good luck as well.

    I should mention that I would stay away from a dedicated server if possible since the costs are typically quite high. You will just have to do the research and see what is going to fit for you.

    OK, just one more thought: Stick with someone who is using Apache as their web hosting system. Although WordPress can be made to work on some other systems, it can be frustrating since some very useful features may not be supported with other systems such as the ability to use SEO friendly URL’s and such via the Apache mod_rewrite function. I’m fighting that with one site I administer right now and will likely have to switch them over to another host.

    That’s good advice for shared hosting, but: WordPress.com hasn’t run Apache for years (except for some minor tasks). I run WordPress on nginx, with clean URLs. It was easier to set up than Apache.

    That is good to know. I have a client on… I can’t remember what system and I’ve never been able to get SEO friendly URL’s. I did it with a plugin for his blog, but for the ecommerce and main site, it runs Joomla! and although there are some add-ons to provide SEO friendly URL’s, it doesn’t work on the system they are running. It would be different if they were a “cheap” web host, but he is paying way more than I am for less capability. Sadly I came to the project after the initial set up and he is reluctant to change at this point.
