Web Hosting with GoDaddy Needed?

  • Unknown's avatar

I registered my domain with GoDaddy and paid them for hosting last year. Because WordPress.com blogs are hosted on WordPress can I let the GoDaddy hosting expire without any interruption to my site? I believe GoDaddy never really hosted the site, but charged me because I ‘ordered’ it thinking I needed it when setting up my blog. I plan to renew my domain name through them, but wasn’t sure about the hosting and don’t want to pay for something I don’t need.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

You’ll need to check with GoDaddy about whether you need the hosting to maintain your domain registration, but your site is entirely hosted with us here at WordPress.com.

Let me know if I can help further!

Go Daddy confirmed that the domain and hosting are separate billable items (domain registration has been renewed), but they have been hosting my content. They said I need to contact Word Press to move content over to the free hosting. Can you please advise how to do this before my Go Daddy hosting expires in mid-April?

    Hi there!

Are you running WordPress software on your GoDaddy hosting location? If so, you can follow this guide for transferring your site from WordPress.org to WordPress.com:

Let me know if I can help with that!

I don’t know. It’s never been a WordPress.org site. I started the site as a WordPress.com site, paid to register the domain at Go Daddy and thought I also needed hosting so paid for that as well. I don’t remember ever setting up software or having Go Daddy do so. How do I move the content from Go Daddy to Word Press.com?

    Hi there!

I can’t see the content you have at your GoDaddy account, however it sounds like you never actually used that space. If you didn’t install anything over there, then you don’t have anything to transfer!

It sounds like you can safely cancel your GoDaddy hosting and keep your domain. :)

Go Daddy claims I do have content hosted there (I spoke with a rep on the phone yesterday). Can you look at my hosting on Word Press and see if I have content there as well? Is there a phone number I can call for Word Press.com support?

    Hi there!

We don’t have phone support, but I’m confident that I can help you out!

By content, we mean Posts or Pages, Media, other documents or files you’ve uploaded. You can see all of your posts on your WordPress.com site here:

    https://dustbunniesanddogtoys.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

It looks like you’ve been using WordPress.com since April 2013, which was when your domain was purchased. This is why I think you likely don’t have content at GoDaddy.

If you’ve logged into a site at GoDaddy to create a website, then you’ll have content there. Their initial response may have been a partial form response to remind to you remove anything you may have uploaded. You may want to contact GoDaddy again and ask them to specifically check your account to see if you have any content.

Let me know how I can help!

I did ask the rep to check and he confirmed I had content on their hosting, but I’ve never logged into their site and created content there. I’ve done that all through Word Press. I will call again and ask them to verify, but if you think it’s all on your hosting then it should be fine. If there is some problem would you be able to reload my site from your backups?

If you’d like to make a back up of your WordPress.com site, you can do so by exporting your content to your computer. Then, in case anything happens, you can always import that file back to your site.

Let me know how it goes with GoDaddy!
