  How can I create a website on my own? I want a blank slate and I’ll code it myself. Also, how do I add a background picture to the website?

  For sites published using WordPress.com, it uses the publishing software from WordPress.org to help you publish your pages and blog posts.

  There isn’t an easy way to code a website from scratch using WordPress as WordPress manages that for you.

  To customize your page, you can browse through the wide selection of themes available and choose one which is more suited to your needs.

  To select a background image that you want, you can do it through the theme customization option:

  You can also develop your own theme if none of the available themes matches your need. Do note that a Business Plan subscription is required to upload a custom theme.
