web site

I’m trying to create a website that people can view and contact other likeminded people through. The directions here seem to be for a Blog. How do I set up a website?

Hello @qsworldwide,
You can make a WordPress.com site work like a traditional website, instead of creating a blog, which is a type of website.
The main difference between a website and a blog lies in the style of the communication. The blog is a non-static page which aims to create direct engagement and communication with the readers. On the other hand, a ‘traditional’ website is mainly made of static pages and may contain a dynamic page (the blog).
Therefore, to be able to create a ‘traditional’ website you need to know the difference between a page and a post, which is well explained here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
Then you can also have a look at this page, Using WordPress.com to Create a Website: https://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/.
Let me know if all is clear and if you have any other doubts or questions over this matter, happy to help!

Thank you for your help Stefaniamattana, I will look at the links you have supplied over the next few days.
With regards to the setting up a web page I have a few more questions that you may be able to help with.
I have a domain name for a web page but I do not as yet have a host for this.
Can I set up a web page in WordPress and then transfer it to a host or do I have to use the host’s web designs and build packages?
The web pages will need to be a format that can be interactive in some way and not static. The pages will need to be able to direct someone to a place at a certain time – the time and location being flexible. It sounds big but I can imagine the actual traffic as being quite small – if any. Is this format available in WordPress?
I must apologise for, what are probably, very obvious questions but as you must have gathered, I am a complete novice, but the concept I have is quite complicated. I may be trying to run before learning to walk?
Kind Regards,
Greg

Hello Greg,
If you have a domain name already bought, you have two ways:
– Mapping the domain here and connect it with your WordPress.com website;
– Get a space through a web hosting services, install the WordPress.org software and create a website there, and connect your domain name to that space/website.Everything you create on your WordPress.com website can be easily moved to your self-hosted WordPress.ORG site at any time.
As for the nature of the website you’d like to create, I don’t think there’s anything like that among the available WordPress.com theme.
The only ‘interactive’ kind of theme is the P2, which is still blog oriented though.
However, if you need to specific customisation to lead customers to specific pages according to time and country, you may need the support of a professional developer who can create something custom made for you using the WordPress.ORG platform.Let me know if all the above is clear. If you have any further question, please let me know. Happy Monday!

Thanks again Stefaniamattana,
I get the feeling that what I’m trying to create cannot be done without some help and training.
To create a site that has a specific name – mysite.com for eg – seems to have to have an additional link to or linking through a WordPress name – is this correct?
Also if I wanted to create a site that would allow several groups of people to arrange a meeting, in various cities, in various countries, at set times and locations – and to create a meeting timetable from 1 hours’ notice to 1 month or more in advance and all time in-between – this seems a simple concept and is certainly not ground breaking, but will obviously take a lot of setting up. Is this possible through WordPress?
Kind Regards,
Greg

Hi Greg,
In order to connect your domain name es mywebsite.com to your WordPress.com website (ie. mywebsite.wordpress.com), you need first of all to buy this domain name, then you need to map the domain (mywebsite.com) to make it connect to your WordPress.com website. This way, the website address that will be displayed also on your WordPress.com website will be the one you’ve mapped (mywebsite.com).
The structure you want to give to your website is nothing that can be done with the free WordPress plan. However, I recommend you to enquire about this to the VIP team. The VIP plans sounds to me the best solution for you. They might provide also developing support for your project, but it would be better if you can ask that directly to them. The Staff will be happy to hear from you!
