Webmaster user has been deleted. How to confirm change of webmaster?

  Dear all,

  We are in the need to change the webmaster mail adress defined in the general settings tab of our WordPress admin. The previous webmaster user has been deleted, so even we´ve confirmed the new mail adress with a current admin, the link sent to grant change to the previous webmaster seem to be broken. Message shows: There is a pending change on the mail adress of the previous webmaster, and when you click on the link, you get no answer.
  How would you proceed on that case?

  The site mentioned does not use our managed hosting environment from WordPress.com. Instead, it’s set up on the open source WordPress.org software which is something different.
