WebP image format..can't upload
-
anyone know? why wont wp.com let me upload my super WebP images as they promised is now supported??
-
Unlike wordpress.ORG software installs, there is no FTP access to any wordpress.com hosted sites and we cannot upload any software into them.
That said, we cannot help anyone until or unless they provide the URL for the site they are referring to. Do that now please.

I assume you are referring to https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2015/12/04/webp-images-support/

hey thanks for the reply timethief!!
this is thefreeonline.wordpress.comyesteday I made some nice quality low weight WebP images on Gimp
but the media tab doesn’t find them in the file. I was surprised as I just read a pòst from wordpress.com advertising that WebP format now works and would make loading faster for my posts with many pics.maybe this isn’t quite rolled out yet
all the best…… mike

Hi @thefreeorg, this comment explains why:
With the WebP image format currently only supported by some browsers, there needs to be an original JPEG/PNG’s to serve to those that do not support it. As a result we are not able to allow WebP images to be uploaded as the source image or it wouldn’t be viewable by some of the visitors to your site. The image service will auto-detect user browser compatibility and serve the best supported image format automatically.
So basically you upload a widely supported format, and we’ll serve WebP for you when we can. I hope that helps!
