  Is there a way to complete a site, to see how it works, before subscribing to any plans? It seems as if anytime I want to add something, like the payment link, I get referred to plan options.

  You can get a free site with a .wordpress.com subdomain. Use atemporary name for your site as an example: sitename.wordpress.com
