Website based on wordpress for our Church – steps?
-
Hi everyone…
I’d like to begin to setup our church website. It would have sermon downloads (mp3’s, PDF’s), photo gallery (is that possible?)…
Not sure what are the steps that I need to take in order to begin…please advise…

I would imagine it should be possible alright although I produced ours on a Joomla (PHP) platform which I feel gives a ton more scope more easily, but to me, I would probably do it like this:
1. Set up your server as required i.e. host and space requirements – and pick as much space as possible from the outset – trust me, you’d be surprised how fast you can fill up 100 Mb once you start adding in large MP3s or other files etc. And saves you from having to continually ask for upgrades or worse, risk the site going down when you run out of space unexpectedly.
2. Download the WP installation from WordPress.org (http://wordpress.org/download/) and on there you’ll see a superb document link for a 5-minute install. Work your way through that if you can understand it okay. I haven’t yet put my local copy of WP up onto my server yet, so not 100% sure but think you’d most likely have to set up an SQL database for it etc, but you maybe know how to do that ok – email me if you want more info on it.
3. Once you’ve got the program onto your server and worked through the installation, hopefully all will work out and you’ll end up with a working version of WP with one or two little differences to the WP.com version – you’ll have access to uploading Plugins – and again if you look around on WP.org you’ll find the Plugin section under the Extend Tab and search around in there for the ones that look like they’ll suit your needs best. There’s a couple of cool church type templates too in there, but also do searches in Google for more and you’ll no doubt be spoilt for choice.Hope that helps.
