Website blank after wordpress update

  • Unknown's avatar

Updated to the new WordPress on this site and something has gone wrong and it’s showing a black page and wp-admin isn’t showing, which leads me to believe its WordPress.

Any advice on this would be appreciated?

Seen this as well. Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 500 (Internal Server Error

    Site is http://balladofcrows.com/

    Thanks

    Hi.

Based on this error, it seems the site you are having issues with, http://balladofcrows.com/, is a self-hosted WordPress install.

Questions about self-hosted WordPress (better known WordPress.org) sites can be directed to the support forums at https://wordpress.org/support/

To learn more about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org (self-hosted), please review the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

@rkoffy called it, when he said you your site is probably a wordpress.org website. So you can head over there and ask on those forums if you have not already

However, we are here now, so why not right? :)

Can I ask did you do an automatic update of your WP install by clicking “update now” in your admin dashboard or did you do a manual update overwriting files using ftp?

    Hi Jsnmrk,
I used the update now, and when tried the site today it’s appearing blank.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m assuming the only fix might be to use the FTP and manually update?

    Hello, kurtmacdesign

We have written a very explanatory and easy to follow tutorial on how to fix the so called: WordPress White Screen of Death

You can have your issue fixed in 5 mins. Please check the tutorial here:

    Hey @kurtmacdesign,

If your site was working 100% before the update and then not working after the update (and thats all you did – i.e you didnt make any other changes) Then something must have gone wonky when you clicked the automatic update.

A manual update is the best way to make 100% sure everything was updated right. Here are some steps I would try (and have done before):

    1. Get the latest WordPress zip (or tar.gz) file.
    2. Unpack the zip file that you downloaded.
    3. Deactivate plugins. (you wont be able to do this if you have the white screen – but if you did upload a plugin prior to the update then maybe delete that plugin from the wp-content>plugins folder)
    4. Delete the old wp-includes and wp-admin directories on your web host (through your FTP or shell access).
    5. Using FTP or your shell access, upload the new wp-includes and wp-admin directories to your web host, in place of the previously deleted directories.
6.Upload the individual files from the new wp-content folder to your existing wp-content folder, overwriting existing files. Do NOT delete your existing wp-content folder. Do NOT delete any files or folders in your existing wp-content directory (except for the one being overwritten by new files).
7.Upload all new loose files from the root directory of the new version to your existing wordpress root directory. (Your wp-config.php file should not be overwritten.)

Let me know if you need anymore help – and let us all know if you got it right. :)

Can you elaborate on this “Upload all new loose files from the root directory of the new version to your existing WordPress root directory. (Your wp-config.php file should not be overwritten.)”

I’m using FileZilla to complete this, and I have done steps 1-6 so far.

    Cheers

    Sure thing.

In the .zip file you downloaded there were folders and ‘loose files’

The folders would have been the wp-admin, wp-content & wp-includes. The loose files would have been everything else in that root .zip file, things like: index.php, wp-activate.php, wp-comments-post.php etc (there are about 16 ‘loose’ files in total)

Its these files that need to be uploaded and allowed to overwrite the old ‘loose’ files in your old WP installation in your root folder of your WP install.

FileZilla is PERFECT for this! :)

Does that make more sense now? Let me know how it goes.

If you followed the steps above and you are sure your wp-config.php file is configured correctly (i.e linking to the database correctly)

Then I would suggest (in addition) trying the following:
Make a backup of your plugins folder to your PC/MAC then I’d suggest DELETING all 3rd party plugins from your wp-content>plugins folder via FileZilla

You should be left with the ‘new’ install of WP and only the plugins that ship with WP. If you still get the white screen then it could either be your wp-config file is not configured correctly or your theme you are using is not compatible with the new update of WP 4.3

I’d be happy to look into it for you if you want. Just shoot me a mail with your WP admin login details and your ftp details to:jsnmrk.com [AT] gmail DOT com

Other than trying the above and without seeing it myself I cant think what may be the problem.

As a final resort and last ditch effort: Most (good) web hosts make daily backups of their customers sites. So you could ask your web host to restore your website to a previous period BEFORE you updated. Some web hosts even give you this option through your Cpanel. You would only loose content (pages, posts, images) that you added between the restore point and when you clicked the automatic update.

    Hope this helps?

    Cheers!

The site you are asking about does not seem to be hosted on WordPress.COM so you need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using.

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/7-things-to-know-before-posting-in-wordpresscom-forums?replies=1

This site is for support of sites hosted on WordPress.COM. You should address your questions to WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using: http://wordpress.org/support/

The forum at WordPress.ORG is not connected to WordPress.COM so you will need to open an account at .ORG if you do not already have one. You may use the same email at WordPress.ORG as you do at WordPress.COM.

To solve this problem I made a backup of my plugins locally then deleted all the plugins via FTP then uploaded them one by one to find out which one it was, and in the case it was SEO Yoast.

    Thanks for your help all.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh and I then just downloaded the new version of SEO Yoast and uploaded the new folder to the plugins.

    I’m glad I could help. :)

    Have an awesome weekend!
