Hi,
Are you looking to host on WordPress.com? Or are you looking to create a WordPress website using the open-source software from WordPress.org, but hosted elsewhere.

I haven’t decided yet just need to figure out how to get these files back onto a wordpress site

Hi there,
How do I get a tar.gz files back up and running on wordpress?
Most tar.gz exports are intended for self-hosted WordPress sites, which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc.
Essentially the file you have should contain (when you open it) several smaller files that you would need to manually set up on a new host. This is not something we could help with as we use a different version of the WordPress platform here on WordPress.com. Because of this we do not have the option to set up a new site manually from a server backup.
However, this guide should explain the process of restoring your backup on a new host: https://wordpress.org/support/article/moving-wordpress/#moving-to-a-new-server
You can also find advanced support with moving a WordPress site from one host to another here: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/installation/
Hope this helps point you in the right direction!

Okay so I can’t get a hosting plan through WordPress and then upload this file into the backend to restore this site?
-
No, it’s not possible to upload a file like that directly to our servers. The only import options we have on WordPress.com is for a .xml content export file, or on our Business Plan a full-site migration where an active site is migrated directly from another host’s servers to ours.
If you get a WordPress hosting plan from another hosting provider, you should be able to upload your file there.
