Website creation / waited domain transfer

    Hi there – I was informed after securing my domain and building my website off Sqaurespace that WordPress would be a better fit for my blog components. I’m about to go live with the website I’ve built off Squarespace under my domain for the short term- but I’d like to build my longterm website off WordPress. How can I do that?

    Hi there,

    First, go to https://wordpress.com/start/site/ and create a new site with us. To use your own domain you’ll need a paid plan, though you can also hold off on that until you’re ready to switch over the domain.

    Then you can follow these steps to import your existing content from the Squarespace site:

    Import from Squarespace

    Once you’re ready to switch the domain over to us you can either do that by mapping the domain to us (leave it registered at Squarespace and just point it to WordPress.com) or transferring it to us (move the entire domain registration to us so you renew it with us each year going forward.)

    Thanks for the response. I guess I’m not 100% sure that my question is answered – I’d like to keep my website live on Squarespace until I can completely build my website on WordPress. Once it’s built on WordPress, then that’s when I’d like to changing the mapping of my domain from Squarespace to WordPress. Is this possible?

    It is :) People tend to call it staging, and it’s fairly easy to do here since you get a “free” address to start your site with.

    You’ll start a new site first, add the content and set it up as you’d like (I recommend keeping the page names the same where possible), and when you’re ready, add the domain as @kokkieh outlined above.
