Website deletion

I accidentally deleted my domain name like an idiot, and would like to restore it.
How do I go about restoring it?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi, I’ve got that all sorted out for you. The domain should be active in your account again.

However, remember that if you wish to use it with a WordPress.com site, you will need to repurchase a paid hosting plan. I see that you had the Premium plan previously. But the Personal plan is an even lower cost option:

    Hello

I did not subscribe to a free domain name. I actually purchased the domain name of muddybootsperu.com and now I am being restored to a free wordpress.com domain name? Why? I paid, in total, $96 for the domain and the premium plan. When I canceled the premium plan, I was refunded $77

    96 – 77 = 19

So the $19 for the domain name was kept by WordPress and they suddenly give me a free domain name. This is not correct and I expect that it will be fixed promptly.

    [REDACTED]

  • Hey there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

Do you wish to keep the domain: muddybootsperu.com?

If yes, that outstanding $19 would cover the cost of that domain registration. To note also, in order to set a primary custom domain, a paid plan would need to be in use.

If you wish to repurchase a plan, we can offset the cost of the domain (as it’s in it’s first year of registration) from the new purchase.

Does that sound of interest? :)

I purchased a custom domain name for $19. Why do I not have that custom domain any longer? It worked before I accidentally deleted it. If you don’t fix this problem, I will cancel everything with WordPress and go somewhere else. I shouldn’t have to pay another 19 dollars for something that I have already purchased

Here is a screen shot of the .com domain as of today. It was not like this before accidentally deleting it.

  • Hi there,

The domain is active in your account and you can see it here: https://wordpress.com/me/purchases/

When we restore a deleted domain (as my colleague did above) it can be 24+ hours until it starts working again. This is why you may see a “parked domain” message even though the domain has just been returned to active status.

I can confirm that if I visit muddybootsperu.com it is working correctly and I am redirected to muddybootsperucom.wordpress.com as expected. Please note that it’s not possible to set a site on the free plan to use a custom address, so for now your site must use the “wordpress.com” address, but anyone that tries to visit muddybootsperu.com will be redirected to the wordpress.com address without issue.

If you wish to set muddybootsperu.com as the custom address for your site, you can do that by adding any of our plans, all of which include a custom address option you can use to set muddybootsperu.com as your site address:

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I am very displeased with this service. Please refund ALL OF MY MONEY, $96 and I will go elsewhere. I will be leaving negative feedback for WordPress.com

another solution, so that I do not leave negative feedback, would be to allow me to migrate muddybootdperu.com to another host provider since WordPress kept the $19 I was charged for the domain name. You cannot claim that a domain is free when I was charged 77 dollars + 19 dollars for a package and domain and then only refund the 77 dollars. That does not constitute a free domain. Allow me to migrate to another host provider and problem solved.

    Hi there!

I understand you’re upset about this, so please allow me to take a moment to explain what’s happening here.

There are mainly two things to note:

    1. You can set a custom domain as the primary address only with a WordPress.com plan. You can register a domain without a plan, but the domain will redirect to the free WordPress.com address. This is because a paid plan is mandatory to set a domain as the primary address. Your site redirects to the WordPress.com address because it no longer has a paid plan.
    2. A free domain is included with a yearly paid plan for the first year. The WordPress.com Premium plan you originally purchased is $96/year. So you get a free custom domain with the plan for the first year. But if you cancel the plan, your domain is no longer free. You can use the domain for free as long as you also keep the paid plan.

Now, because you canceled the plan, your domain is unset as the primary address. You still own the domain (which is why it loads your WordPress.com site), but you need a paid plan to be able to set it as the primary address of your site. And the domain costs $19 instead of being free because you canceled the plan with which the domain was offered for free.

There are two options for you:

    1. We’d still love to have you host your site with us. If the WordPress.com Premium plan is more than you need, you can consider the WordPress.com Personal plan. The Personal plan costs $48/year, and we can adjust it accordingly so you pay the remaining ($48 – $19 = $29) to upgrade to the Personal plan.

By doing this, you end up paying a total of $48 for the Personal plan (which is the full price) and get the domain for the first year without any additional domain registration fee. You can also set your domain as the primary address by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/en/support/domains/set-a-primary-address/
    2. If you’ve decided to move to a different host, you can point your domain to your new host by changing the nameservers. A new domain registration can’t be transferred until it is 60 days old. That’s the ICANN rule, which is a regulatory body. It’s not a WordPress.com restriction. If you had registered the domain elsewhere and wanted to transfer it to WordPress.com, you still couldn’t until it was 60 days old.

If you prefer the second option, here’s what you can do:

    • Get your new hosting service provider. We have some recommendations here: https://get.wp.com/hosting/
    • After buying your new hosting, please ask them for their nameservers.
    • Add those nameservers to your domain by following these guides.
    • Within 72 hours of adding your new hosting company’s nameservers to the domain, it will start loading your WordPress.com site.
    • After 60 days (to any time before the domain is up for renewal next year), you can transfer the domain to another registrar by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/en/support/domains/transfer-domain-registration/

Hope that helps. Let us know if there’s anything else we can help you with.
