Hi there,
Website design is important, because a better-designed website is more likely to attract visitors than a poorly designed one, simply because it is more visually appealing and easier to navigate. This increase in traffic will help your site get indexed by Google and other search engines. If you have any specific questions about how to design your website and improve your site’s ranking, I’ve outlined some ideas below. If you want any more help, feel free to ask any other questions.
CUSTOMISATION (Design):
Once you’ve made a domain name and started your website, there will be a list of steps (including customising your home page) on the My Home page to do with setting up your website. If you want to edit what’s written on a page, go to My Site > Site > Pages and select the page you want to edit.
There’s a support post on this: https://wordpress.com/support/pages/#edit-a-page
If you want to go to the Customiser, you can go to My Site > Design > Customise.
The support post about customising your website is https://wordpress.com/support/customize/.
You can also check out video tutorials on customisation at https://wordpress.com/support/video-tutorials/customize-your-site/
If you’re having trouble getting started in general, there are other tutorials to have a look at:

Or look at the support pages on setting up your site:

Also have a look at https://wordpress.com/learn/ if you need further advice. If you’re not sure whether audiences will find your site interesting, one idea might be to set your site to Private, give access to it to people you know who have a WordPress account, and ask for their feedback. (You can still do this if your site is Public, obviously, but if you’re not quite ready for that yet you can give certain people access to your Private site.)
GETTING INDEXED (SEO):
You can find more about SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) here: https://wordpress.com/support/seo/Make sure your site is set to public. If you’ve only just done this, it may take 4-6 weeks for google to index your site.
After you’ve done this, there are many ways to increase traffic, some of which are outlined below:
TAGS – One way is to use a mix of appropriate broad and specific tags. For example, if your site is about reviewing books, you might create a tag ‘book reviews’, but also a more specific tag ‘book review about [book title]’. Someone who wants to find a book to read might type in ‘book reviews’ to Google, so might find your site. Someone who wanted to know whether a certain book was what they wanted might type in ‘reviews about [book title]’, which is why the more specific tags are helpful. If you wanted to appear on the WordPress reader, make sure not to use more than 15 tags and categories combined; if there are any more, the Reader won’t index your site. You can read more about that here: https://wordpress.com/support/topics/
KEYWORDS – It’s also an idea to use keywords. For example, if your blog was a book review blog, use keywords such as the book’s title or themes within it. Make sure it doesn’t turn into ‘keyword stuffing’, though; if you use so many keywords that the sentences become unnatural, this could affect your site negatively.
POSTING – It’s important to keep posting. Search engines like it when blogs are being updated regularly.
