website designs, themes and hosting etc….
-
HI Guys. I’m a complete WordPress novice. I’m trying to figure out if I would be able to replace my current ‘snap pages’ website with one that i am thinking i could use wordpress to create. There’s definitely a learning curve. I have a handful of questions to start with:
1) If I sign up for the ‘Premium’ plan at $8 a month, does that include both the design platform and the actual hosting?
2) I already own two domain names for my current site petermoon.com and petermoonband.com . At present, both of those domains are connected to my snap pages site design….. Once I get a design I like built at WordPress, can I hook both those domains to it?
3) Would that ‘premium’ plan allow me to to create playlists of our music and also
easily create a video page where we can link our youtube promo videos ?4) Would I also be able to create a simple store page to sell our t-shirts, cds, merch etc? At my current site, I’ve got my store page set so that I have paypal buttons to accept payment.
5) Would wordpress allow me to use code snippets – for instance there are a number of ‘widget’ style tools that reverbnation provides for musicians – things like gig calendars and stuff like that. You can copy the embed codes for them and use ’em at websites, social media etc…. Would WordPress be compatible with that?
6) ok last question for now – I have done some google searches for ‘best free wordpress templates for bands and discovered a few I actually liked at this site
https://athemes.com/collections/best-free-music-wordpress-themes/
Can I actually one of use these fairly seamlessly with wordpress?
I really like the one called ‘surplus concert’

Hi there,
1) If I sign up for the ‘Premium’ plan at $8 a month, does that include both the design platform and the actual hosting?
Yes.
2) I already own two domain names for my current site petermoon.com and petermoonband.com . At present, both of those domains are connected to my snap pages site design….. Once I get a design I like built at WordPress, can I hook both those domains to it?
Yes. The Premium plan includes the option to transfer your domains to us if you would like to manage them under one roof. One transfer is free under your plan, and the second transfer would be $18.
3) Would that ‘premium’ plan allow me to to create playlists of our music and also
easily create a video page where we can link our youtube promo videos ?Yes, it is possible to embed individual YouTube videos (you could add several to a single page so all videos are listed on that page:
more info here: https://wordpress.com/support/videos/youtube/
WordPress does not have the ability to create audio playlists however you can add individual tracks to a single page. They will not play in “playlist” fashion however. i.e. it will not automatically advance to the next track when the current one is finished.
To do that you can use the 3rd party service Spotify, which has a playlist option that can be embedded here: https://wordpress.com/support/audio/spotify/
4) Would I also be able to create a simple store page to sell our t-shirts, cds, merch etc? At my current site, I’ve got my store page set so that I have paypal buttons to accept payment.
Yes, you can set up a simple online store using the Personal plan. we have several “blocks” you can add to your page layout to list product for sale:
– https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/payments/ (uses Stripe for payments)
– https://wordpress.com/support/pay-with-paypal/ (uses PayPal for payments)5) Would wordpress allow me to use code snippets – for instance there are a number of ‘widget’ style tools that reverbnation provides for musicians – things like gig calendars and stuff like that. You can copy the embed codes for them and use ’em at websites, social media etc…. Would WordPress be compatible with that?
most sites that offer an “embed code” have not designed that code to work with our WordPress.com service, so that likely will not work under the Premium plan. However you can upgrade to our Business plan, which would open up more options such as to upload plugins or themes designed by outside companies, as well as use advanced embed codes such as the one that reverbnation supplies.
Under the Premium plan we can accept embeds from Bandisintown however, which may work for your purposes: https://wordpress.com/support/bandsintown-tour-dates/
6) ok last question for now – I have done some google searches for ‘best free wordpress templates for bands and discovered a few I actually liked at this site

To upload a 3rd party theme or plugin will require our Business plan, so that is not possible under the Premium plan.
To clarify, those themes are designed for the more advanced (developer-friendly) version of the WordPress platform, which allow you to set up a self-hosted WordPress site, which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc.
Sites on our Premium plan do not use the advanced platform (so no plugin or theme uploads) but the Business plan uses the same advanced version of the platform that your chosen theme was designed for. Upgrading to Business will allow you to use it here:
Under our Premium plan, you would have free access to any of our “built in” themes here music here: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/music
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Wow thanks for that quick and thorough response! So much to learn! I will definitely check out “bands in town” to see if that would serve the purpose and replace the functionality of the reverbnation widgets I’ve used in the past. Ideally I wanna be able to get by using the “premium” plan for now and not need to spend the extra for the “business” plan. I have been trying to mess around with some of the themes and templates and feel like I have run into some roadblocks with certain things. I can’t really tell if that’s because I am still only on the “free” plan. I’m trying to familiarize myself with the platform and see if it’s a good fit for me before I actually BUY IN so to speak. I have tried to create a simple Videos page where I add youtube vids on two different theme designs and each time it doesn’t show me the option to save what i did. Is that bc I’m only on the free plan?

In that case you might find our tutorial site useful:

What plan you’re on has no effect on whether or not you can save or publish content. And any features that require a paid plan will be clearly labelled as such, with a prompt to upgrade, in the dashboard and editors.
Can you walk me step by step through exactly what you’re trying to do?

Hi and thanks again for responding! I have started watching the tutorials. I think wordpress is probably gonna work out for me. I’ve been trying to also experiment with some other web builders like squarespace and wix in an effort to see which feels the most natural for me – ya know, which seems wired the same way my brain is LOL. I was able to get some video loaded up there. I’m pretty sure once I decide to upgrade to premium I will switch to one of the premium themes.
I’m just trying to make sure I can successfully put together a ruff demo of what I need first. My impression right now is that you guys offer the best value / bang for the buck.
This is where my little demo is at right now. It’s very rough I know. I am needing to rearrange page layouts and write copy etc. etc…

I just had a similar sort of thing happen as I was trying to put together a dummy store page. I understand that in order to sell via paypal I must upgrade to premium plan. I’ll probably do that in the next day or two as I get more familiar. When I added a pair of “pay with paypal” blocks and created the product links, I could see them on the edit page. I then clicked ” update” up at the upper right hand side. I can see the edits I made there on the edit page. But when I click “preview” or “visit site”, I don’t see those things. If I go back to the edit page, I can see them again. Is this because I haven’t upgraded my plan yet? I hope I’m not frustrating the heck outta you guys with my questions. Thanks again for all the help!

Hi there,
I then clicked ” update” up at the upper right hand side. I can see the edits I made there on the edit page. But when I click “preview” or “visit site”, I don’t see those things
That is correct. Without an upgrade you can experiment with the blocks, see how the work, or fully set them up. However, they will not display on the site itself until you upgrade.
Another thing to be aware of (this is a requirement on PayPal’s end of things) is that you will need a PayPal Business account in order for site visitors to be able to pay with their credit card. If you have a standard PayPal account, then you can still use the blocks, but they will have the option to pay only with PayPal account funds, and not via credit card.
i.e. the site visitor will need a PayPal account to be able to pay you. If you upgrade to PayPal’s business plan then the blocks will automatically switch to allow a credit card purchase.
One way around this (and something you can use even on a free site) is to use code to add a simple PayPal “buy now” button. https://wordpress.com/support/paypal/
The instructions outlined on that article are a little different from what PayPal suggests, because the code that PayPal gives you does not work on WordPress.com the same as it works on other sites.
However, the following instructions will allow you to set up a PayPal button on your site, without the need to upgrade. You can set it up now, even on your free site.
Hope this helps!
