    Hey hi hello!

That is odd! But with backups and other tools, the contents should still be safe.

For starters, what is/was the URL of the website? We’ll know which steps to take afterwards!

    Thank you!

It seems like the domain was suspended by the registrar it’s bought from.

There’s a wide range of reasons a registrar may suspend a domain for. For instance, improper or incomplete verification can result in domain suspension. Also, depending on the circumstance, the suspension can be reversed.

In this instance, I think it’s likely verification related. It’s possible that you didn’t respond to the registrar’s verification email within a specified time frame, or something of the sort.

I suggest getting in touch with the registrar you bought the domain from, either through their website or through any contact methods mentioned in their emails sent to you.

I hope this helps, and good luck!

I don’t believe thats true. my domain is thruogh hostgator and is on and active. no issues found there. the issue seems to be with wordpress.

  • Unknown's avatar

i don’t believe the statement that it is odd either. disappearing websites seems to be a thing with wordpress.

also, there is a strange username where my username should be. i cant see the password because it’s not visible, but its far to many characters to be the password I created.

When I look up the domain, the following information comes up:

    ns1.verification-hold.suspended-domain.com
    ns2.verification-hold.suspended-domain.com

This is most commonly because the registry suspended the domain name, and often because of a failure to verify the email address or because of a change in contact details that require verification.

Can you check if you’ve received any emails from either HostGator or even WordPress?

I’m sorry that you feel WordPress commonly has disappearing websites. However, I can assure you that websites hosted with WordPress.com or their contents are only taken down if there’s been a violation of policies.

And when WordPress.com suspends a website, the website is replaced with a page particular to WordPress.com that informs users of a suspension, as well as what can be done.

Which leads me to the next point.

You are currently posting in the WordPress.com forums; these forums are mainly for assisting websites hosted with WordPress.com, a managed-hosting service.

When you say your domain is through HostGator, do you mean that you bought the hosting package with HostGator that comes with a WordPress installation?

If so, HostGator is a separate entity from WordPress.com. As with all hosting platforms, WordPress.com cannot take down a site of another host (in this case HostGator).

To seek WordPress-related assistance for your site, which I assume was built with the WordPress software, there are separate forums to support websites like yours that are hosted outside of WordPress.com and built with the open-source WordPress software. Here’s the link:
    https://wordpress.org/support/forums

While I sincerely believe this is registrar related, I may be wrong, and the folks at the WordPress.org forums are likely to know better.

also, there is a strange username where my username should be. i cant see the password because it’s not visible, but its far to many characters to be the password I created

    .

Given that HostGator and WordPress.com are separate hosting platforms, could this be related to the username discrepency?

As for your password, I believe the black dots used to mask the password do not reflect the actual length of the password, as part of concealing the information to onlookers.

Now, the story is very different if you bought your domain through HostGator, and then did domain connection / domain mapping to connect it here to a WordPress.com-built website! (Which, perhaps tangentially, is only possible if you’ve purchased any of the WordPress.com plans)

If that is the case, do please say so, and I’ll be happy to guide you through the appropriate steps. (And in which case, my sincerest apologies for the irrelevance of my lengthy response)

I hope this helps any bit, and I’m genuinely looking forward to an update from your end!

the latter of your email is correct, i started at HostGator then did domain connection / domain mapping to connect it here to a WordPress.com-built website. Everything was fine while building the site. I was away from the site for about 10 days while getting other business things handled. Upon trying to log back on to do some last and final changes, I am unable to log back in under “(sitename)/wp-admin” ..under my username it says I have no site yet. I am very confused and have no idea what to do. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Goodness gracious. Then regarding my wide miss of a lengthy response, I must apologize to you yet again, and thank you for your monk-like patience. There surely must be a temple out there in your name; maybe a statue.

From the additional context you’ve provided, I’m further convinced that this is related to LaunchPad’s/HostGator’s email verification process.

Long story short, HostGator is known to change a website’s name server to NS1.VERIFICATION-HOLD.SUSPENDED-DOMAIN.COM (as in this case) when a user doesn’t respond to an email asking to verify a detail (i.e. email address).

I also base the conclusion on the following premises:

    1. Your time away from the site (see next point 2).

    2. The domain was registered on August 2, and updated on August 18. This matches LaunchPad’s (HostGator’s) policy to suspend a domain name if a domain order is not validated within 15 days. (Upon suspension, a ticket notification is sent to the email address used to register the domain.)

    3. The name server changes (“NS1.VERIFICATION-HOLD.SUSPENDED-DOMAIN.COM”).

    4. The absence of WordPress.com’s standard site-suspension webpage.

I suggest you contact HostGator about the matter, particularly through the the post-suspension ticket notification that was supposedly sent to your email. The email(s) may be in your junk/spam folders.

In the meantime, I’m also elevating this post’s priority by adding the modlook tag, as Staff likely have better input than I can offer at this point. (Plus after my huge swing and miss, I simply want you to have a much smoother process from here on out!)

Given that this means someone else will be taking this case, I wish to once again thank you for your patience. I sincerely hope that your site gets back up without any further hassle.

    Thank you, and good luck!

I think there’s some confusion here. There are three different “WordPress” at play here:

    1. The free, open-source WordPress software which powers your website.
    2. WordPress.org which is the open-source project that works on the WordPress software and where you can get the software for free to use on your own hosting provider.
    3. WordPress.com which is a managed hosting provider of the WordPress software and with whom you’re contacting now.

Since we don’t host your site on our platform, we’re very limited to what we can help with and advise as we have no way to access or affect your WordPress software installation. Additionally, since you don’t have any websites here at WordPress.com – free or otherwise – that’s why you see the “no sites” message.

As @josegreyes94 indicated, the problem here is that your domain is suspended.

The nameservers being set to a verification-hold.suspended-domain.com indicates that this domain was suspended by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) for not verifying your domain contact details. From their website:

This specification requires a registrar to take action when a registrant does not respond for over 15 calendar days to a registrar’s inquiries regarding the accuracy of contact details or Whois data associated with the registration. The action can be to terminate or suspend the non-responsive registrant’s domain name, or to place a lock on the domain name registration until the registrar is able to validate information provided by the registrant.

If you failed to comply with this requirement, ICANN can suspend your domain. You need to get back in touch with HostGator support and get their help in verifying your Whois contact information so ICANN can revoke their suspension.

Again, WordPress.com does not host nor are we your domain registrar so we can’t do anything here to help you. HostGator, as both your domain registrar and hosting provider, are the ones that need to help you here. They can also set your site to a temporary URL so you can continue working on your site while you sort out the domain problem.

I hope that clarifies things! Best of luck.
