Website doesn't work after update

Hi,
I downloaded an update for wordpress (I think to version 4.6.1) this evening. It seemed to be working (ie, downloading & installing) but then the website immediately went offline and now can’t be loaded at all (‘page isn’t working – http error 500’).
I hadn’t updated it once since I got the website back in December 2012. I’ve never been too bothered about updating stuff that works fine, and I was afraid of exactly this sort of thing happening. I can’t remember what version I was updating from, but it was an older one. Any suggestions?

This is wordpress.COM support. Here all wordpress version updates are done by Staff about 1 month before they are available to wordpress.ORG users.
You are posting to the wrong support forum. That site is not on wordpress.COM servers and we cannot help with it.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. As you are referring to a site that is not hosted here, if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
