Website down

I have a website that is hosted on Bluhost and uses wordpress. It is currently down. Any ideas?

  • Hi there!

Since your site is not hosted with WordPress.com (it is a site using the open-source WordPress software, from WordPress.org, but hosted with Bluehost), you’ll want to reach out to them directly about it or write on the community forums: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can read more about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

http://wordpress.org/support/ is also a great resource for sites using the open-source WordPress.org software.

But I purchased the domain name through WordPress when I first set up my site, and they chose a 3rd party registar, and that group says they can do nothing, that I have to go through WordPress since they were the root of the transaction. They told me that WordPress will not want to do anything, but to press them, because they ultimately can help.

Bluhost is only the hosting for the podcast. They have no control of the domain name.

I really need assistance here. I’m trying to renew a domain name that nobody seems to know how to renew. Thanks.

  • Unknown's avatar

And I have visited the forums, but I can’t login … this is all on WordPress.org

No email address is recognized. This is a complete disaster in the making because I have a beautiful empire online and activists have tried to tear it down for years. Now they’ll get my domain name and make POE sites, like they did with another one i owned. I’m not sure why I can’t renew a domain name that I own. Nobody seems to know how to do it.

OKAY, I”m making headway. The domain name is correct and renewed, but on some screwy registar with a clunky GUI. I need to figure out how to reconnect the domain name to the content, and maybe bluhost is where to start. WordPress sold me the domain name and got me connected with this questionable registar. Thanks.

  • Hi there,

WordPress sold me the domain name and got me connected with this questionable registar.

WordPress is not a company like Bluehost. It is a free and open-source software developed by a community of volunteers. So it’s impossible to have sold you a domain or pointed you to the registrar you’re referring to.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

When I signed up for the business plan five years ago WordPress included the domain name. That then somehow was housed at a 3rd party registar.

Right now inside a wordpress environment I cannot open wp-admin, as it says “403 forbidden”

I can’t get answers from the 3rd party registar, wordpress, or bluhost. This is really frustrating. Thanks.

  • We don’t have any record of domain names or Business Plans under the account you’re currently logged in to.

What is/was the URL of the site with the problem?

  • Unknown's avatar

The URL is talkingbiotechpodcast.com I log in with (email visible only to moderators and staff). Works every time. I have five years of once-a-week posts logging in with (email visible only to moderators and staff)

    This is so frustrating.

  • Your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted with GoDaddy.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

https://wordpress.org/support/ is a great resource for sites using the open source WordPress.org software, and you can find support for that at: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Your hosting provider’s support team may also be able to assist.

Thanks for responding. I was sold a domain from the folks that I use to put my podcast online. I pay them for use of themes. They have a 3rd party registar that is GoDaddy/Wild West domains that cannot do anything without WP’s approval.

At this point I’m going to move everything I do. I’m going to lose my domain name, and have to migrate 5 years of podcasts elsewhere. I have been on hold and on the phone for 12 hours over three days to sort this out.

The GoDaddy/WildWestDomains spent tons of time with me. They tell me that since WordPress holds the top-level access to the domain, they must release the domain out of cancel status, even though I have it renewed through 6/2021.

This is extremely distressing. I can’t believe the lack of help I get on this critical issue, and the second I can move everything from WP I will. I have two other websites with WP, one with a substantial e-commerce cost, and I don’t trust WP anymore after this.

And i cannot sign in to any wordpress.org support site. I used every email address I have, and I can’t sign in. This is horrible. Absolutely a disaster.

  • Unknown's avatar

The hosting at Bluehost says that the DNS was changed. The A record is wrong. This happened 7/18.

At this point I’m prepared to just cancel all associations with WordPress, register a new domain name, etc. The hosting party has all of my data and files.

The problem is WordPress and the fact that 5-6 yeas ago they used a bad 3rd party registar. Now I can’t do anything to connect my domain to the proper DNS because I’m locked out of any ability to change it.

    This is absolutely horrible. Kevin

Hi folks, When I go to talkingbiotechpodcast.com I see a note that it is parked free courtesy of WordPress.com.

If you don’t see the option to renew your domain in your WPcom Manage Purchases dashboard https://wordpress.com/me/purchases it’s possible that it was registered under a different WPcom account to this one you are using to post here to our forums. Since Staff already mentioned something similar above “We don’t have any record of domain names or Business Plans under the account you’re currently logged in to.”

Please be patient for Staff to reply again in this thread. Thanks.

    Apologies, @kevinfolta replied

I’m being very patient and I appreciate any help.

There is nothing in “purchases” and I can see “talkingbiotechpdocast.com” in the corner. It seems like this domain is in limbo and I cannot do anything to access it, pay for it, etc. I wonder if it was malicious. This is so sad.

I’m glad to send screen shots.

  • Hi Kevin,

I can confirm that talkingbiotechpodcast.com is registered with us, but that domain expired on 7 June and was subsequently removed from your account. It is about to go into redemption at our domain provider.

The domain expired because our attempts to auto-renew were declined by the bank. We sent a notification in this regard to the email address on file for the account that owns the domain on 7 June.

At this point we are still able to recover the domain, but we can only do that at the request of the WordPress.com account that owns the domain, and that domain was bought using a different account than the kevinfolta username you used to post here.

You see talkingbiotechpdocast.com listed under My Sites in your kevinfolta account because you have your Bluehost site connected to this account via the Jetpack plugin. But the domain itself belongs to a completely different account, and we’ll need you to log in as that account and comment here to confirm before we can start the recovery process for this domain.

Let me know if any of this is unclear.

If you’re not sure what username/email address you used to register that domain, please follow our account recovery process at https://en.support.wordpress.com/account-recovery/ to regain access to the correct account.

    kokieh,

OK, I think I have this figured out. It was attached to a long-dead account that I erased last year. I can’t get the emails for it. I’m really working at it. I can sign into it from WP so let me see if I can get it there. Thank you.

  • Unknown's avatar

The problem is that I can’t access the email associated with that old wordpress account. I’m logged into it on WP! That’s a start. Is there any way you can move it into my “Manage Purchases?” I’ll do it!

If I go to “help” there I can’t access the email account to see what help is available!

  • I’m glad you’re able to get into the right account.

We don’t have the ability to move a domain from one account to another – due to domain ownership regulations literally only the account that owns the domain is able to do something like that. But before you will be able to do that we’ll first need to renew the domain and get it restored to your account.

So here’s what we need to do next:

First, I’ll need you to update the email address for the vernblazek account to one you have access to. There’s a trick you can do with your Gmail address so you don’t need to create a completely new one, though:

if your email address is example[at]gmail.com, you can create an alias like example+somethingelse[at]gmail.com. As far as Gmail is concerned it’s the same address, so emails to this alias will land in your existing inbox, but our system will see it as a different email address so you can use it for this account.

Let me know once you’ve made this change and verified it, and I can send you a link to pay for the domain’s renewal – we can only send that link to the email address associated with your account at the time we create it.

Meanwhile, I’m emailing our domain provider to get the recovery process started. This is a manual process that can take up to 48 hours, but as we’re also going into the weekend already I’ll get this started while we still sort out the payment so hopefully it can still be processed today.

    kokkleh,

Okay, I beat you to it. I changed it to (email visible only to moderators and staff)

If you can get me the details to pay for it I’ll get it done. This has had me up and working for several nights now. Wow.
