Website down
-
Hello, we run a small charity bookshop and had recently set up a website to sell our books online. We paid a 3rd party £150 to host our website for a year, which we were aware was expensive, but since we don’t have the IT expertise we felt this was the safest option. Unfortunately the website is now down with a HTTP 500 error, and this company is quoting us an additional £50 per hour to fix the problem with no guarantee over how long it would take. Could someone help please?

Hi @janetf123 I have visited sioptytawe.co.uk and for me your site is online. Were you able to get your issue sorted out?
If not, I should clarify up front that We’re limited in how we can help because we don’t actually host your site on WordPress.com. Your host (LiteSpeed) uses the open-source variant of the WordPress platform which functions differently than what we offer on our managed WordPress service. Because of this we don’t have access to your server files or the ability to take a closer look.
The problem you are describing sounds like a plugin conflict (which usually results in 500 error) and for that the solution is usually to access your hosting account directly and disabling your plugins one at a time until the site is back on line. When it does, it means that there was a conflict with the last plugin you deactivated.
Although we’re not your host, this method works well for most 500 errors. If you continue to have issues you can find help for your variant of WordPress here: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/
Hope this helps point you in the right direction!
