Website from scratch

I have a domain name that is hosted on Godaddy that is on Squarespace currently. I want to redesign a website from scratch on WordPress. I paid Squarespace last month for my year plan and it ends next year July. Until then I want to design a completely new website on WordPress and keep the same name as my site now. How do I get started with designing a website from scratch on WordPress and later in July launch it?

Hello there, you haven’t mentioned which flavor of WordPress you mean. WordPress comes in 2 flavors: the fully hosted WordPressdotcom (where we are ) and the open source WordPress (org) project at https://wordpress.org This support guide explains some of the differences between them: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ and may assist you in deciding which flavor best suits your needs.
If “by scratch” you mean you write the website’s code, CSS, HTML and PHP then you’ll want to look at hosting your own install of the WordPress software.
Here on WordPressdotcom we try to keep things simple. Every site here like smmlifer.wordpress.com comes with a default theme, which you can adjust a theme’s underlying CSS or entirely change themes, but we do not have access to a theme’s underlying HTML or PHP.
The ability to edit a theme’s CSS comes with either the Premium or Business plan upgrades. In order to upload 3rd party custom themes you’d need to upgrade to the Business plan. More on that here:
