Website from WordPress.org to WordPress.com

Hi! I have a website that was created and is being hosted and maintained by a local company (domain name is registered separately elsewhere). Unfortunately, their customer service is sub-standard and I do not want to use them anymore. That website is on WordPress.org and and I would like to migrate it to WordPress.com. I believe that is doable but before I start and since I am not familiar with WordPress.org self-hosting, I have a few questions:

    1. On the WordPress.org admin, it states that I have to update to WordPress 4.2.2. Since the site was created a while back using template Just Shop 3.2.4, how crucial is it that this has to be done before I export the site?

    2. When I export the website content, will the theme with all the plug-ins be included?

    3. Please let me know if the migrating/re-directing process is correct: Export the website content on WordPress.org, and then go to WordPress.com site and import the XML file. Since the domain name is registered elsewhere, it has to be re-directed/pointed/mapped to the WordPress.com site (e.g. by changing the DNS name server). Does that sound about right?

This is a learning process for me so I appreciate any help. Thank you very much in advance.

    Suri

Nope, you can use only the WordPress.com themes:
    https://theme.wordpress.com/

When I export the website content, will the theme with all the plug-ins be included?

    Nope, see here for plugins:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/

Please let me know if the migrating/re-directing process is correct: Export the website content on WordPress.org, and then go to WordPress.com site and import the XML file. If you want use a custom domain on WordPress.com you need to buy the domain mapping upgrade and change the “namerservers”:

And the export/import process is correct.

Export the website content on WordPress.org, and then go to WordPress.com site and import the XML file.

Thank you for your response. Just to be absolutely clear, in this case there is no point for me to export the content from WordPress.org to WordPress.com. Yes?

in this case there is no point for me to export the content from WordPress.org to WordPress.com.

    Your content —–> Yes.
    Your Theme/Template & Plugins —–> No.
Your Custom Domain —-> Yes, but you need

Another question: in what scenario would exporting the contents from WordPress.org into WordPress.com be applicable or useful since the template layout would not be included during the export?

    It depends of your choice.
There are +350 themes on WordPress.com
    https://theme.wordpress.com/
and you can choose the one that suits you.

And if you want to build a shop on WordPress.com maybe this can help you:
