Website gone offline
-
My business website, with domain http://www.linguagenesis.org.uk, disappeared offline at the end of July, which I only noticed as I went into the WordPress control panel and noticed there had been a period of inactivity. When I typed in the URL, it did not load and had failed to do so after several attempts over the last 24 hours. Even when you type in the business name on the Google search engine, the site does not come up. All the content is accessible from the administrator log in panel, of which I have taken charge since late 2013, but I am clueless as to why the site has gone. The renewal is on 5th September, but what if this problem persists? WordPress offers limited means of getting support. Can anyone help, please?

Hi Carl,
If you own the domain linguagenesis.org.uk and want to use it here at WordPress.com, you’ll need to update the domain’s name servers so it uses the WordPress.com name servers:
- NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
- NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
Your domain registrar (where the domain is registered) can help you with that step, if you need. You can also find the full details about mapping a domain to WordPress.com on our support page to Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping).
If you’d like further help with that domain or the WordPress.com site it’s linked to, you can log in to the WordPress.com account you used to create the site and purchase that domain upgrade and contact us directly about that.

Hi Rachel,
Thanks for that. Along with LCN’s support, I managed to solve the problem. When you type in http://www.linguagenesis.org.uk, it loads, but the URL defaults to http://www.linguagenesis.WordPress.com.
While this is fine, I feel it may have caused another problem. When I try to access my business email account at mail.linguagenesis.org.uk/webmail, it also defaults to mail.linguagenesis.wordpress.com, but does not load.
Can you help at all, please?
Kind regards,

Hi Carl,
I’m glad you were able to sort out that earlier problem. The issue you mentioned with your domain defaulting to another URL is because your site’s primary domain was the linguagenesis.wordpress.com address (instead of linguagenesis.org.uk). The primary domain is what will appear in your browser’s address bar when you visit your site.
I just changed that for you, to make your domain linguagenesis.org.uk the primary domain on your site now. It may take a little time for that change to take full effect, so please don’t be worried if you see a “redirect loop” message when you visit your domain right away. That will sort itself out once this change takes full effect.
When I try to access my business email account at mail.linguagenesis.org.uk/webmail, it also defaults to mail.linguagenesis.wordpress.com, but does not load.
Right now, you don’t have any Custom DNS records set up on your domain for mail.linguagenesis.org.uk, so that page doesn’t exist. Your domain has these two custom DNS records related to email service:
- MX record for linguagenesis.org.uk pointed to 93.97.173.179 with priority 10
- A record for webmail.linguagenesis.org.uk pointed to 93.97.173.179
You can view these DNS records, and all of your domain’s custom DNS, in your domain manager on the My Domains page.
If your email isn’t working correctly, please ask your email provider for the DNS records required to make your email service work for your domain. I’d be happy to help you enter those records on this end, if you need.

Thank you,

Hi Carl,
I see what happened now — you previously had your domain pointed to the WordPress.com IP address 66.155.9.238, instead of the WordPress.com name servers. WordPress.com doesn’t use static IP addresses, which means they can change at any time, and we’re no longer using that IP address (66.155.9.238). When that happens, your domain stops working.
Now that your domain is using the WordPress.com name servers, you won’t have to worry about that happening again. I also added new DNS records for those other subdomains (mail.linguagenesis.org.uk and old.linguagenesis.org.uk) in your domain manager on the My Domains page. (Only those DNS records in that domain manager are used now — any records you have saved with your domain registrar won’t be used unless they’re also entered on this end.)
Please let me know if you have any other questions, or if I can do anything more to help!

Thanks, Rachel. I sort of understand. Which URL gives me access to my emails?

Hi Carl,
It looks like your email provider means for you to access your emails through webmail.linguagenesis.org.uk or mail.linguagenesis.org.uk. The DNS records on your domain are for a third-party email service (not through WordPress.com), so if that’s not working for you I’d recommend getting in touch directly with your email provider for more assistance.
If your domain registrar provided that email service, they can help you confirm that those are the correct DNS records and help you with that service. If they ask you to change any of the DNS records on your domain, let me know and I’d be happy to help you with that process. You can also make changes directly using our Custom DNS guide.

Hi Rachel,
Yes, you’re quite right. My e-mailing service is from a company called Squirrel Mail. After trawling through the site content, determining which e-mail address I needed to write to, I explained the situation and gave them all the information from the DNS Servers. I was told that my message would require moderation and that no guarantee of a response time could be made. Hence, I could be receiving important leads for business by e-mail and not being able to access them. Also, there are certain sites from which I get custom who may believe that I am ignoring customer enquiries. I usually receive around 5 – 10 important e-mails per day, so waiting over a week for this company to get back to me could mean spending absolutely ages answering 100 or so e-mails. Is it necessary for someone to get back to me before a possible switchover to a WordPress e-mailing system can be made? Obviously, I wouldn’t want to lose any unread messages.
Many thanks,
Carl

Hi Carl,
If you’d like, you can switch to the WordPress.com Email Forwarding service, or Add Email to your domain from a different email provider. Either of those options would allow you to get set up with new email service right away, instead of waiting for your current email provider to get back to you.
I’d be happy to help you get set up with our email forwarding service, or answer any questions you may have about adding other email service to your domain, to get you started with one of those options.

That would be great, thank you. My email address is (email visible only to moderators and staff)
If there’s any more information you need, just let me know.

Hi Carl,
I went to set up Email Forwarding for your domain linguagenesis.org.uk, and I ran into a bit of a snag. The domain isn’t pointing to the WordPress.com name servers anymore, so it can’t use our email forwarding service. (Nothing set up for your domain on this end will be active unless you point the domain back to those WordPress.com name servers.)
You can see the email forwarding settings in the domain manager on your My Domains page, and create new email forwards there, but the domain will need to use our name servers for that service to work.
Please let me know if you have questions about that!
(I also redacted the email address in your last reply. You can write your email in full in your replies here, and it will be redacted for everyone except staff. That way I can still see that information, but it won’t be public to everyone else viewing this forum thread.)

Hi Carl,
Excellent! You can click on your domain linguagenesis.org.uk in your Domains settings, or head straight to the Email Forwarding settings, to set up your Email Forwarding service. It’s all ready for you to start using now — you can add each email address you want to use (ending in @linguagenesis.org.uk) and specify where you want that address to forward to.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!

I think I’ve managed that, but how do I access the emails which I’be not been able to access all week? They were previously at http://www.linguagenesis.org.uk/webmail. Is there a new WordPress URL from which I can access them?
Carl

Hi Carl,
You’ll need to check with your previous email provider about those other emails and how to access them. Your domain is set up with the DNS records you had before for these two subdomains:
webmail.linguagenesis.org.uk
93.97.173.179mail.linguagenesis.org.uk
93.97.173.179If your previous email is no longer available at those addresses, you’ll need to get the correct DNS records from your previous email provider. That email provider hosted your email service, so they have all of your previous emails (that email isn’t controlled by WordPress.com) — to be able to access them through a link like http://webmail.linguagenesis.org.uk, your email provider has to give you the correct DNS records to point that address to their email service or give you a different link to where you can get to those emails.

Hi Rachel,
Well, I’ve sent two emails over the last 10 days to the Squirrel Mail e-mail provider and they haven’t replied at all. There isn’t even a phone number.
The guy who originally set it up (does not work for Squirrel Mail) said it was an old-fashioned site and suggested a change over. What I do know is that Squirrel Mail let in a he’ll of a lot of junk mail – something I don’t appear to be getting via the email forwarding service. Am I right in thinking that any e-mails sent to @linguagenesis.org.uk are being filtered through to my personal e-mail at (email visible only to moderators and staff)
Kind regards,
Carl

Only the specific emails you set up in the Email Forwarding section of your domain manager (in your Domains settings) will be forwarded to you. That creates the email address so emails can be forwarded to you.
If emails are sent to an address that isn’t set up there, even if it ends with @linguagenesis.org.uk, those emails won’t be forwarded because the email address doesn’t exist.

Hi Rachel,
Thanks for the reply. I’m a bit confounded. The URL to access the page to enter my user name and password to get into my business e-mailing account (www.lingua genesis.org.uk/webmail) is the one which does not load. As far as I’m concerned (though I could be wrong), my business email, (email visible only to moderators and staff), still exists. Will people who try to contact me on that not get their messages delivered? If so, then it’s a bit of a problem since I receive potential business to there and the email address is on different sites all over the Internet. I have included my personal email address in the email forwarding service, so was hoping that mails to (email visible only to moderators and staff) would come through to that personal email address? Squirrel Mail are really bugging me and if possible, I’d like to keep my business email address and use a different email provider. I don’t think Squirrel Mail are ever going to get in touch.
Kind regards,
Carl
