Website information lost to Alzheimer’s. How can i recover our site.
-
Hello All.
I have been trying to use WordPress recovery, password recovery and the online help but I’ve hit a dead end.
Our site is a community club and isn’t a paid site. The person responsible has slipped into Alzheimer’s and it was too late before we figured it out. We’ve had his son try to help but there are other problems, the fathers email is registered to a page that he let go at some point, and we are getting no where.
I’ve got about two hours into this this morning and I’m guessing this is my last chance. Below is an email I tried to send to WordPress but I cant because I don’t have a paid site nor one of the three items that need to be known. I’ve blanked out or used initials for information that I don’t want to be open internet.
“I am JN the treasurer of the club COPA5-BBFC. BP has been taking care of our webpage https://copa5.wordpress.com/ for many years. Over the last few years he has developed Alzheimer’s and can no longer remember what WordPress is nor what our web site is. We have had his son, RP, help and the best they could come up with is this. Its the latest email he sent me.
“As you can see, Dad’s memory is failing.
He sent me a username and password to try logging in with last night:
N: ********
P: ****************
I tried it and unfortunately it didn’t work for me. I requested a password reset email based on the “bp” username, and it said it sent a reset request. I asked dad to let me know if he gets it.
Unfortunately there is another possible wrench in this: Looking on the site, it lists dad as the webmaster, but the email address it has for him is ***********@b***4.ca. He had the domain b***4.ca registered for a while, but doesn’t anymore. So any email sent to that domain would be lost anyway.
If dad doesn’t get a password reset email, I think your only recourse at this point is to contact WordPress, explain the situation, and beg for their help.”
I am reaching out because we don’t really have any members that are able to build a new site and we would like to be able to retain the information that is on it.
I’m not sure how I can prove who we are but the club is registered with the BC societies Act. Legal business with the club is normally done by Executive meetings and if you need a motion passed showing that we have chosen a new web page administrator or ????? Let me know.
Thanks in advance
JN

Hello, @ecstaticc681a38afd!
Thanks for letting us know about this! I understand how challenging this situation must be.However, to help you regain access to the account, especially if you no longer have access to the email linked to it, the only option is to try our account recovery method by following this guide:
https://wordpress.com/support/account-recovery/#verify-your-account-ownership
There, you’ll find the types of information we can use to verify ownership and help you regain access.
Also, I just wanted to kindly mention that, for security and privacy reasons, since we’re on a public forum, please try to avoid sharing any sensitive information.
Please let us know if you have any questions or need any additional help, and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Thanks for the reply. I was concerned that our website might have invalid information Re: upcoming Discovery Aviation events. It is only posting old stuff so that is good.
I followed your instructions, although I had already done it and can see no way to access the site. I was wondering how I can get rid of it or stop its being viewed. In your reply you gave a link for changing the view settings but only if I had access. Which i don’t.
I was also curious about using a paid access. But i think paying will only gives me a new site not access to our old site. Correct?
I’m guessing there is nothing we can do as all avenues have been tried. Correct?
Advice out there for other people. Get two people on your clubs site or have the access information in another members position. Treasurer, president etc.

Hi,
I understand how important it is to keep your site’s information up to date, let’s see what option we have left.
If you weren’t able to provide proof of ownership through the recovery form, we can still make the site private, so visitors won’t be able to view its content.Once the site is set to private, it may still appear in Google search results for some time. You can request that Google remove it from their index using this tool.
Would you like me to set your site to private?

Hello josefhtest
My expectations are we will make it private but i need to take this to the club executive to let them make the decision. I will get back to you after our next meeting which is first Wednesday of September
Thanks

Thanks for keeping us updated, and it makes sense that you’d want to bring this to your club’s executive before moving forward.
If you decide you’d like the site set to private, just reply back here in the forum, or you can also email us directly at help@wordpress.com so we can assist you right away.
Thanks.
