Website Integration after WordPress installation

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been using WordPress on the web for a while. I had a blog and recently bought a domain at PortugalFutbol.net, and have continued growing it. I just installed WordPress on my computer and set up a server and all that jazz, but I can’t figure out how to link what I installed to my existing site.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Sam,

So to clarify, you are looking to host your site entirely on your own home computer rather than at WordPress.com going forward? And in doing so, you would like to change the settings on your domain name to point towards the server which you have running in your home, yes? Additionally, you want to get all of the content which you currently have on your site here (at portugalfootball.wordpress.com) over to your site which you have set up on your home server.

Let me know if that’s what you’re looking to do. If not, please clarify for me and I’ll try and help you out any way I can!

Thanks for getting back to me! That’s all correct. I have a site hosted through WordPress right now that I control solely on WordPress, but I’d like to be able to control it on my home server.

Is that possible without losing all my content?

Sure, that’s absolutely possible. We’re not going to be able to give you a whole lot of help, since you’re going to be dealing with a truly self-hosted WordPress.org installation (and since we only provide help with WordPress.com), but yes. That’s definitely something that is possible!

It sounds like you already have your installation up and running, but just in case, this article on the WordPress.org Codex might help you: http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Local_Installation_Instructions

You’re going to want to do an export of all of your content from us. Here’s an article on how to do so: http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Once you have that xml file, just run an import on your local installation of WordPress: http://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_Content#WordPress

The import process will pull all of your posts, pages, comments, and media, however it will not pull your theme or any customizations which you have made. You’ll need to redo those.

After you have done all of that, you’ll need to point your domain. You’ll need to make sure that you have configured your local server to be able to serve the webpages externally either by using IP addresses or through nameservers. It’s up to you as to how and there are a number of tutorials out there on how to configure Apache (assuming that’s what you’re running).

To point your domain towards your server, you’ll just need to update your DNS with us. You can point your domain by following the directions right here:

    Manage Your DNS Records

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for all the help. This is exactly what I needed to know!

I do have one further question, though. I exported my .XML file from by blog, and it was over 4 MB in size. When I went to upload it to my server site, the maximum I could upload was 2 MB. Is there any way around this?

That’s going to be a limitation that is set within your server. Depending on how you have set things up, you may need to change that setting within Apache (if that’s what you are running) or just within your php.ini file.

If you google something along the lines of “increase upload sizes in php.ini” then you should find resources on how to make these changes. Be very careful though, as making the wrong changes to server settings can bring down your whole server. Don’t forget to restart Apache after you have made these changes or else they won’t become active and you’ll wonder why nothing is happening! ;)

Thanks for all the help. I figured it out!

Excellent! Glad to hear that it’s working out for you. Well done digging in to this!
