Website Longevity and Maintenance

How long will my website stay online without manual supervision?
Recently, I had told a friend of mine (who I’m helping set up a WP blog) a really stupid assertion about how the blogs need maintenance every two weeks or else it would disappear. She asked me about how long the website would stay up and I plucked out a rushed 10 second answer out of my head that was absurd (in a dishonest way). We both need peace of mind about this. And also, to know if there are other elements to look into when trying to maintain a good WordPress blog.

    Please and Thank You!!!

  • Hi there,

On WordPress.com we never take sites offline due to inactivity, so if you host the site on WordPress.com, it will stay online for as long as WordPress.com itself continues to exist. We maintain the software and server for you, so you don’t need to worry about that.

If you use the open source version of WordPress at another host, it will need to be more hands-on. For one, the site will only stay online for as long as you continue to pay for your domain and hosting plan. Additionally it’s good to regularly check on the site, in case an automatic software update or a problem with the server causes the site to go down, not to mention the risk of a site getting hacked or infected with malware.
