Hi @sturner100 ,
I understand, domains can be complicated. Let me see if I can help.
A domain name is the web address people will type to access your web site. But until you set up a site, it doesn’t point to anywhere in particular. In the process of setting up your site, you will point your domain to your site and make it your web address. Your site can be hosted on any server with any company, basically. So you have to think, (1) what do I want my site address to look like? and (2) where do I want to host my site?
I already have a domain name
That’s great! You have already decided what your site address is going to be. Now you have to decide where (with which hosting company) your site is going to be hosted. When setting up your site, you will have to point your address to that site.
Hosting at WordPress.com
If you are going to create a new site at WordPress.com, then you will have to point the domain you already own to your site here.
If you map your domain, it means your domain registration and maintenance (keeping contact information up to date and paying annual fees etc.) will be conducted with your registrar (where you purchased your domain), while you site administration and site construction/maintenance will be done at WordPress.com.
If you transfer your domain, it means you will keep the same domain, but WordPress.com will look after the registration and maintenance for you, as well as look after hosting your site.Hosting with another service
Many domain plans also come with a hosting subscription with that company. Check and see if your domain purchase came with a hosting subscription, too.For more information on all this, you can check out the following support documentation.
