This is a slightly complicated but extremely frustrating issue, and I’m hoping we can find a path back to happiness….

I’m part of a committee that looks after a website on behalf of our local Triathlon club – my email address is not associated with the site in any way, and the username that we’ve used historically to login and manage the WP site ‘does not exist’ according to WordPress when we try to login with the latest password we can remember.

We think that what happened is that our payment method may have elapsed at some stage and the site was taken down as a result, at the same time, our domain payment method (domain is with Discount Domains currently, not WordPress) also expired, and our email stopped working. We’ve since paid the bill for the domain, and emails have started arriving again which is positive. When we visit the domain it now also says “Future site of triwanaka.co.nz” too, so we’re confident that the domain problem is solved.

However – we don’t know where to start in recovering the website itself, which is built and managed in WordPress. We don’t know when it stopped working, and because we can’t login we can’t access any useful website support. We’re now faced with potentially rebuilding the site from scratch, and it’s going to become urgent soon because it’s almost triathlon season in New Zealand.

Has anybody successfully solved a problem like this in the past? Is there any way at all to make progress, given that it’s going to be difficult to prove that I have any control / ownership / access to the site in question? I think we will still have access to at least one of the associated email / recovery emails, so I hope we can get somewhere.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hey there,

    Thanks for reaching out!

It looks like the website wasn’t originally hosted with WordPress.com, but instead another provider. This means that the original hosting provider would be the place to go for a restore.

It looks like Web Archive captured versions of the site, so if a restore isn’t possible, you could look to rebuild the site, and grab the content and images: https://web.archive.org/web/20240000000000*/triwanaka.co.nz

Out of curiosity, what goals do you have for the website? I’m wondering if we can help here at WordPress.com.

We look forward to hearing from you!
