Website no longer properly displaying

My website is no longer properly displaying my images. I use the Panel theme, and you can post webcomics. Recently, for whatever reason without changing any of the settings, my comic image is being shown twice in the same post.
It still appears fine on my mobile device, but not on my desktop site.

Correction: Has the same problem on my mobile device. Did WordPress do some kind of update that is conflicting with the Panel theme?

Hi there, I do see that this page https://lifethen.com/comic/pranger-part-1/ displays the image as a “featured image” and again as an image in the post/project itself, but I don’t see that happening on this page https://lifethen.com/comic/pranger-part-7/ or on the demo site at https://paneldemo.wordpress.com/
It’s possible that a recent update did change something on your theme, but since Panel is a retired theme I have no way to check it on my test site. Generally speaking, retired themes aren’t updated for anything other than security updates.
Can you go to the Customizer and see if your theme Panel offers “Content Options”? If so, try changing the “Featured Image” options there to see if this doesn’t shake something loose for you.
Let us know how that goes.
-
I didn’t see any kind of Content Options or Featured Image options.
Likely the reason why this isn’t happening on https://lifethen.com/comic/pranger-part-7/ anymore is because as a test, I deleted the image, the added it back and it seemed to clear the problem for that post. However, I don’t want to have to do this another 200+ times. -
I’ve added the MODLOOK tag for Staff, but TBH I don’t know whether anything can be done. Since it may be a few days before they reply, please do come back and let us know if you see something change again on your site (i.e. it was a temporary issue). Thanks.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It’s important to note that Panel is a retired theme, meaning it won’t receive updates to ensure compatibility with modern versions of WordPress. It’s likely that something in the latest version of WordPress or its editor is incompatible with this older theme. Just to give you some context, Panel was retired back in December 2017, making it quite outdated in terms of WordPress themes.
In light of this, I recommend exploring options from our theme directory that are more current and in line with the latest WordPress software. Continuing to use Panel may lead to further inconsistencies or issues as time goes on.
I hope this explanation helps clarify the situation! If you have any further questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to ask.

The same has happend to my blog. I know my theme is old, but I wanted to use it until I found something that I like, that is easy to use and where my photos are shown in a good way. Duotone used to chose colors automatically but now the background is just white, with a grey comment field. And the first picture is shown twice. Safari does not work either.

Are there any new themes like Panel? I wasn’t able to find anything that is webcomic friendly, mostly specifically has the navigation buttons at the bottom like “first, last, next, latest” to make reading the comic easier.
-
@lifethenecropolis no, unfortunately. Panel is unique. However, you might be able to recreate the look of Panel with the Assembler theme. (YMMV)
Before doing that, however, did you actually go through and update all 200+ comics? At the moment I don’t see the image duplication any longer.
-
No, I didn’t update them all. I tried 3 or so, and that seemed to fix the problem for those three. Then, after a few days, those 3 were duplicating again, but the other 200 that I hadn’t touched seemingly went back to normal. I went to the 3, reset them back to an earlier versions, and it seemed to fix all of them for now. I just now published (and then deleted) a test comic to see what would happen, and it seems to work just fine.
Panel provides exactly what I need from my WordPress site, so it really is too bad it isn’t supported or there isn’t a comparable Theme currently available. Speaking to some other comic/webcomic creators, they’ve stated they aren’t willing to use WordPress, or continue using WordPress, because the lack of comic publishing friendly themes anymore. Frankly, I’m dreading the day I have to switch.
-
Well, glad to hear it was a temporary issue!
As far as a new theme, there’s a feature request if ever I’ve heard one. :)
What defines a comic/webcomic theme? What “must have” features would be on your wish list? Not saying that anything is going to happen, but knowing what those are is a first step.
-
The Panel theme actually shows probably the most important part: the comic on the main page with the First, Previous, Next, and Latest buttons under the comic so readers can easily browse the series. Think of it like reading a book on a website. Having those buttons as easy as possible to navigate is paramount. I used a different WordPress theme years ago that had similar buttons, but they were not as prominent, and people often complained they couldn’t find them (particularly on the mobile version). I was thrilled when Panel came along.
It’s important for comic/webcomic creators to have their own site, their own home base, not just a hosting site like Webtoon or Tapas. So having that kind of functionality is huge.

Gah! Looking at the Panel Demo site, I’m not seeing duplication. What seems to be different on the demo site is that each Comic page there uses the site’s Header image. I’m going out on a limb (and could very well be wrong) and saying that is where the issue lies. In the absence of a Header image on your site, currently the theme appears to grab the first image in the Comic to use as a Featured image (if you didn’t add a Featured image yourself to the Comic in the Editor).
Since I don’t have any way to enable Panel to test this, I checked the Internet Archive and found the archived Panel theme showcase page which might help provide a solution for you.
If not that, I’m afraid I don’t have any more suggestions.
Overall, Panel behaves very much like a Portfolio theme, where Comic is the default page link rather than Portfolio, but without the nifty navigation..

@abjag I didn’t see your earlier post here. To bring attention to your issue, it’s better to create your own forum post with a link to your affected site rather than post into someone else’s forum thread. Just FYI.
Duotone is a unique theme as well that was retired long ago. If that special background color feature is no longer working, you can continue using the theme, but it’s unlikely it will be updated to fix the issue. Sorry for no better news.
-
Thank yuo for your answer Justjennifer. I wrote here because there was the same issue with one picture being shown twice. And then I realized that my theme is old.
Now I have to find a new one and I have many questions about that.
-
I tried adding a header, no effect.
I also tried making small changes, using earlier revisions, also no effect.
-
@lifethenecropolis thanks for letting us know it wasn’t the Header image. The very last idea I have is if you have a WordPress.com plan that allows you to edit your theme’s CSS, you might open a new forum thread or query support directly asking for help in suppressing the display of your theme’s Featured Image on Comics/Portfolio pages. Beyond that, and not having access to test things directly, I really am out of ideas here.
@abjag if you like the display of Duotone even without the colorful background per image, technically you can continue to use it with the understanding that at some point it will likely break with a new update to WordPress.com. If you have questions about looking for a new theme, do please start a new forum thread.
Cheers all.

So once again as a test, I deleted the image from my latest Comic post, the added it back and it seemed to clear the problem for that post.
I then tried restoring it to a previous version, and it went back to having the duplication problem, so I went back to deleting the image and re-adding it so at least my front page doesn’t have the duplication.
Curious to see if it fixes itself in time again, and if the edited post has to be restored again down the line to reset it.
