website protection and email with Premium plan
-
Hello, I’m looking into self-hosting vs. wordpress.com hosting. I’ve self-hosted before and had some issues with virus protection and clean-up that I’d like to avoid in the future. Does WordPress.com offer virus protection in it’s Premium Plan? Also, I’m curious why if I purchase my domain through WordPress.com and have a Premium Plan, why an email account is $50 a year? That seems like a lot!

re: purchasing WordPress.COM upgrades
WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/We have 4 different plans: free, personal, premium and business. All hosting is free regardless of which plan you choose. You can view all wordpress.com plan features here https://wordpress.com/pricing/ Add a plan for each of your sites here: http://store.wordpress.com/plans/.
Details:
There are no trial upgrades, no monthly payment plans, no bulk deal upgrades, and no multiple year upgrades.
We are billed annually and we must pay for all upgrades in full at the time of purchase after selecting a plan.
Also note that purchase orders are not accepted.
Each upgrade bundle applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed. (The only exceptions are one time upgrades for premium themes and guided transfers.)The Premium Plan does not include access to premium themes. Premium themes can be purchased separately and are each a one-time purchase. https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/premium/
The Business upgrade which is the only plan that includes Google analytics also includes access to all Premium themes and other inclusions you can read about at:
Footer Credit Options https://en.support.wordpress.com/footer-credits/
SEO Tools https://en.support.wordpress.com/seo-tools/
However, note that there is no e-commerce capability under any plan here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/small-business-website-1?replies=2#post-2804631.
When you upgrade from Personal to Premium or from Premium to Business you pay the difference between the two plans https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/domain-mapping-almost-impossible-to-understand-how-it-works?replies=4#post-2874012How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.
WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs
https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/
https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/Before you upgrade
Make sure you read the comparison very closely do you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/Also read Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

Thank you for all of the information! I’ll read through the notes you linked to. I am confused as you say the premium plan does not have access to premium themes, but on the plans page it says the premium plan does have unlimited premium themes.
Also, so if hosting is free on all, what are the fees on Premium for? And can you explain why an email address is $50 a year? I don’t want an email inbox, I just want to re-direct the new address to my Gmail.
Lastly, if unable to do e-commerce that’s fine, I’m building a website for my massage business. However, I do want to put my online massage booking service I already have on there. That has a payment option in it. It’s http://www.massagebook.com Will that work alright?Thank you so much for your prompt and helpful info!

(1) PayPal – Know that the only instructions that will work for posting a PayPal donation button on a WordPress.com blog are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/
Note that the PayPal email link is not supported and PayPal customization options are not supported either https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/paypal-button-41?replies=12#post-2517229 This is not likely to be changed any time soon, if at all. Some bloggers create a contact form https://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/ on a page and after the people have made a PayPal donation they provide the link to a private page for downloading files. Maybe that will work for you.

Oh, and does WordPress.com hosting provide security and included clean up from viruses, etc.?
I will let Staff answer that. This thread is tagged for their response.

Hi there,
Also, so if hosting is free on all, what are the fees on Premium for?
All plans on WordPress.com are just for additional features, not hosting. @timethief listed the features included in Premium for you. You can also see them listed on the Plans and Pricing pages.
All sites on WordPress.com enjoy the same level of hosting, with unlimited bandwidth and unlimited storage for content, i.e. posts and pages, as well as the same level of security with automatic backups and software updates. Media file storage depends on which plan you choose.
And can you explain why an email address is $50 a year?
We don’t offer email hosting on WordPress.com. The email option you mention here is if you buy a G Suite subscription through us. You buy this subscription from Google, and they charge $5 a month or $50 a year for this service. We are just a reseller of this particular product.
If you don’t want to use G Suite you can also use an email account purchased at another email provider, or you can even use free email hosting like what is provided by Zoho mail:
I don’t want an email inbox, I just want to re-direct the new address to my Gmail.
That you can do with the email forwarding feature, and that’s included in your plan. However, be aware that if you forward emails to Gmail, you’ll be able to receive at the custom address, but not send, as Gmail doesn’t allow email aliases for free Gmail accounts.
However, I do want to put my online massage booking service I already have on there. That has a payment option in it. It’s http://www.massagebook.com Will that work alright?
You can definitely link from your site to the booking service you use. You can either use a custom menu link, as @timethief explained above, or you can put the link in a widget, e.g. an image widget with a Book Now button that links to the outside site.
Does WordPress.com offer virus protection in it’s Premium Plan?
All plan levels on WordPress.com enjoy the same level of security, and that includes scanning of any file you upload for malware and viruses. In fact, the types of files that typically contain viruses cannot be uploaded here at all, and the types of code that can be used to inject malware into a site is also not allowed here but will be deleted automatically if added to a post or even a comment. We also verify that any media files you upload is in fact that particular media type, and not a different file type pretending to be a media file.
In the almost five years I’ve been using WordPress.com, including two years as a forum volunteer and over a year and a half of working here full time, I’ve not once heard of a site on our servers being infected with a virus or malware. The way WordPress.com works, one site becoming infected could potentially bring down the entire platform of tens of millions of sites, so it’s in our interest as much as in yours to keep the platform malware-free.
