Website Renewal

Hello, I am a student at USC. USC was paying for my website domain name while I get my M.A. degree. Part of my program is building a personal website. I had a website with ALL undergrad and graduate school content. I was under the impression the school was paying for my domain name until I graduated. I extended my graduation date because I had go to go intense eating disorder recovery program. I was not aware that USC stopped paying for my domain name. I went to go on my site today, but noticed it was gone. I checked my email and it said Word Press deleted my information because no payment was made. I am more than happy to pay, I just wasn’t aware I needed to. Is there any way to get my site and its content back?

I don’t have a site linked to this WordPress.com account

  • What is the URL of the site you are trying to access? We’ll be happy to take a look and see if we can help.

    Thanks for that information.

To clarify, there’s three different “WordPress” at play here:

    1. The free, open-source WordPress software which powers your website.
    2. WordPress.org which is the open-source project that works on the WordPress software and where you can get the software for free to use on your own hosting provider.
    3. WordPress.com which is a managed hosting provider of the WordPress software.

It looks like your site had been hosted over at Bluehost previously, not WordPress.com, so there’s not much we can do here but I’m happy to get you pointed in the right direction.

If you hadn’t downloaded a backup of your site the last time you accessed the site, I’m afraid that content would have been lost. :(

Regarding the domain itself, it’s still shown as being registered and that an individual (probably you?) is shown as the Administrative contact. You can see that information here by searching for your domain:

    https://lookup.icann.org/lookup

I would recommend reaching out to someone at your college to see how you can use your domain again and ask if they made a backup of your site before they stopped paying for it.

    Best of luck!
