website structure query…can i do this in wp ?
-
hi there !
i’d like to build a marketplace for collectors.
here are the global features:
– multiple sellers.
– sellers would be charged a per listing fee, which is the only time i would receive payments.
– sellers would then create a username + password (membership).
– all sellers would be responsible for uploading images + adding item details + price negotiation, etc.
– no commission will be charged for any sales.
– all transactions would be made directly btwn the buyers/sellers.
– i would only give them a marketplace and add on a blog section, news headlines, etc.
– i would like to be able to access all accounts and be able to monitor/remove accts that are not respecting the marketplace guidelines.i suppose it would be a collectors-only marketplace a bit more refined than craigslist + added blog + possibly ad supported in the future.
questions:
– is this possible via wordpress ?
– could separate payment accts be set up; for myself + ea seller ?
– fees incurred ?
– anything else i should consider ?many thanks in advance.
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

Hi there! The WordPress software in itself doesn’t have the features you’re describing, but there are plugins which should be able to achieve this.
Here on WordPress.com, you’d want the Business plan to start with, so that you can add plugins to the site and take advantage of our other features like the daily backup, 200GB storage, and SFTP:
https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/business-plan/Then you’d likely be looking at WooCommerce, and possibly a vendor extension for WooCommerce – there’s one on the WooCommerce extension marketplace:
- https://woocommerce.com/products/product-vendors/
The vendor plugin linked above does let you choose to set commission at a fixed amount, which could possibly work as a listing fee; and uses payouts to transfer payments to vendors. You would generally have access to view all products and ensure they’re conforming to guidelines.
You can of course have a blog/news section in addition to the marketplace!
In terms of fees, it’s worth bearing in mind the cost of the plan, any paid extensions (the Product Vendors extension is a paid extension, for example), and also any fees from your chosen payment provider (e.g. PayPal, Stripe, or others) who may charge on a per-transaction basis, or a regular subscription cost.
It sounds like you have a pretty clear idea of what you’d want to do! If you’d be in need of help to set it up, we do have a Built by WordPress.com service which could be useful for you:
