Website Transfer

Hello! I am new to WordPress and am working on taking a website and transferring it to WordPress. The site I am working with is currently under turbify. When I login to turbify is says there is a connection to WordPress hosting. Does this mean I don’t have to transfer? My biggest question is how do I update the current website without having to complete start over in a new WordPress? I appreciate the help!

Hi there:
To avoid confusion, there are three different “WordPress” at play here:
- The free, open-source WordPress software which powers your website.
- WordPress.org which is the open-source project that works on the WordPress software and where you can get the software for free to use on your own hosting provider.
- WordPress.com which is a managed hosting provider of the WordPress software and with whom you’re contacting now.
With that said, can you let us know the URL of your website? Once we have that information, we’ll be better able to advise.
Thanks!

The URL is jdeng.org and it does already have a hosting provider through another company. I am just looking to give the website and update.

@amers957, ah, I understand now. You’re currently hosting through turbify and they have a WordPress option there, and you’re wondering whether that’s the same thing?
I’m not familiar with their hosting, but generally speaking, you can use WordPress as a DIY installation of free software with most hosting companies, or you can use a managed installation like we have here. We take care of the site for you in terms of maintenance, security, backups, spam filtering, etc.
My biggest question is how do I update the current website without having to complete start over in a new WordPress?
It looks like the site is built with HTML pages right now. If you don’t want to use WordPress, you can always redesign it using HTML or hiring a contractor like you did before.
Or you can get started on a CMS like WordPress, which can make updating a lot easier going forward. And we specialize in hosting WordPress sites here.
If you want to set up the site in WordPress, you can do that while the old site is still active, then make the new site active when you’re done. I would recommend creating a page here: https://wordpress.com/page
Give it the same title as a page you have on your site. You can choose whatever layout you want, then you can copy text from the old site to this new one. Replace images as you’d like, remove sections if you don’t need them, etc.
Publish that page, then repeat this process for each page on your site.
When you have all of the pages, you can pull them all together with a menu, update colors as needed, and fine-tune your template. We’ll be here to help.
This article has more details on converting an HTML site to WordPress:
Many different website hosts have their own custom-built website building tools. These offerings help people who don’t have experience coding websites from scratch to create a site of their own. However, people find these drag-and-drop website builders have some drawbacks. Because they’re a one-size-fits-all offering, they tend to lack the personalization and functionality of many modern sites.Once you’re done, you can upgrade the site if you didn’t already to get rid of ads and add your domain. Then you can make the new site live.
I feel like that’s a lot of info, but is it helpful to have an overview of what to do? We’d be glad to answer any questions you have, and if you want to share your goals with this update, we’d be happy to help how we can. Just let us know!
