Website unavailable after domain transfer
-
Hello,
I’m having a technical issue with my website after transferring my domain from Google Domains to WordPress.com. It’s been down since yesterday. For some context, it’s due to me not having updated the DNS records before the transfer (I’m not an educated webmaster, just a person working on my own trying to figure out things with WordPress). So I tried to update the DNS records but am not sure if it was done correctly. Bluehost told me to replace domain servers from Google.com to ns1.bluehost.com and ns2.bluehost.com, but I don’t know if I need to put the 2 domain servers address in the records or just one? How to know where and in what order to change the domain servers addresses?
Do I have to wait for 72 hrs to know if the update works? Is it a possibility that I can lost my contents while the website is down?
Here is the link to my website: https://the practicalstarseeds.com.
Thanks a lot for your help. Have a beautiful day.

Hi there!
Welcome to WordPress.com! I can see that your domain transfer was successful, and we renewed the domain for another year at no extra cost. The domain still has Google nameservers, though, which is why it doesn’t load your site.
If your site is hosted by Bluehost, you’d need to add both of those nameservers to your domain. Please follow the steps here to do so: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/change-name-servers/#add-third-party-name-servers
You’ll see that there are four active nameservers on your domain right now. You’ll want to remove all of them and add both of Bluehost’s nameservers (one per field).
After updating the nameservers, you’ll need to give it some time to propagate (it can take up to 72 hours for the DNS changes to take effect). Within that timeframe, the domain will be pointing to your Bluehost site, and the site should load without any issues (assuming it’s configured on Bluehost’s end as well).
Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.

Hello,
Thank you for your prompt reply. I updated the DNS records following your instructions (it’s very clear). Hope that the propagation takes less than 72 hours!
By the way, I chose Bluehost to host my website but figured out that they work with WordPress.org and not WordPress.com, which have caused multiple technical issues with the plugins. In the future, if I wish to change my hosting service provider from Bluehost to WordPress.com, is there any specific process to follow, please?
Thanks a lot. Have a beautiful day.

I’m already seeing your Bluehost-hosted site loading when I visit your domain. If you’re still not seeing that, you can clear your browser’s cache and try again.

We’ll be happy to have you over. We have created a tool specifically for such migrations. It’s an easy and automated tool, and you can learn more here: https://wordpress.com/support/import-using-move-to-wordpress-com/
By using that tool, your whole website, including your posts, pages, media files, plugins, and themes, will be moved over to WordPress.com.
Let me know if you have any other questions, and I’ll be happy to help.

Hello,
Thank you for the instructions.
I have tried to follow the steps multiple times and have been stuck at the first step once Move to WordPress.com is activated. Indeed, I keep seeing the message that I’m not authorized to move the site and have to ask for the website administrator.
So I decided to move the site manually by exporting the XLS file and importing it to WordPress, but it messed up and appeared as a new website I need to build from scratch (though all the contents can be found on my dashboard).
Please advise.
Thank you in advance, have a beautiful day,
Thuy TIen

Hi @helloee9a7e3a82, do you mean you used the Content Only import? That one gets your posts in, but your theme, plugins, theme settings, etc would all need to be added manually. So you would basically get a site with content and comments, but you’d need to set up everything else. That can be a good option if you wanted to redesign things, but not so great if you want to import everything.
If you can copy and paste the error you get with the Move To plugin, we’ll share that with the team & see if there’s an easy fix.
You can also try one of the other move-everything plugins if you prefer. Here are steps for All In One Migration. You’ll want to be sure to read and follow that section on “Before you Move” since that greatly affects how smoothly the import goes:
If you wish to import an entire WordPress site, including plugins, themes, and users, the All-in-One WP Migration plugin can help you achieve that. Follow the steps in this guide to import an exact copy of your website to WordPress.com. Prerequisites This option is suitable for self-hosted WordPress sites if you have already tried the recommended Import Everything and Move to WordPress.com
