Website's down and domain problems

Hi! My site (bishieholic.me) is down for quite some time now and I’m at a loss on what to do.

Last October, I transferred my site from wordpress.com to .org, hosted by SiteGround. That time, my domain was still registered with wp.com. It expired last December. But I was under the impression that I already transferred it under SG so I just let it expire.

So now I’d like to know if that is the reason why my site is currently down? If so, what should I do to transfer it from wp to sg? Or just what should I do in general.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

You had that domain hosted somewhere else, but you’ve never transferred your domain registration away from us. Domain registration and domain hosting is not the same thing, and you still need to renew the domain with us every year even if it’s pointed to a site hosted with a different provider.

To transfer the domain you would have had to contact us for a transfer code, and give that to Siteground so they could move the domain registration itself over to them. This process has never been initiated with this particular domain.

The domain is now in redemption with our registrar. It’s still possible for us to get it back at this point, but our registrar charges a $80 fee to restore a domain from redemption. I’ll need you to agree to that fee before I can get the recovery process started.

The alternative is to wait until our registrar releases the domain and then try to buy it again at the regular cost. However, I can’t tell you exactly when that will be, nor can I guarantee you’ll be able to buy it again once they release it, as someone else might buy it at that point before you’re able to.

Thank you for your reply! And yes, that was a big mistake on my part.

Anyway, once I pay the amount, will everything on my site be restored? If so, what should I do next?

  • I’ve sent you a payment link to pay for the domain’s recovery and renewal. Then I can contact our registrar to restore the domain.

Your site itself should still be safe and sound on Siteground’s servers, as that’s separate from the domain itself. So as long as you didn’t let your hosting with them expire, your site should be back completely as soon as your domain is restored and reconnected.

One last thing, is it possible to pay the redemption fee then once I got my domain back, transfer my domain to SiteGround?

  • Once your domain is restored you should be able to transfer it, yes.

Sent my payment! Thanks for the assistance!

  • Thanks. I’ve emailed our registrar to restore the domain. They might not restore it before the weekend, in which case you might need to wait until Monday, but I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back from them.

  • Okay, your domain has been restored, but we’ll need to point it back to Siteground before it will show your site. Can you please contact Siteground and ask them for the name servers you need to point the domain to them? This information should also appear in your control panel on their end under Connect a domain, or a similar section.

Once we’ve pointed the domain to them your site should come back online, and then I can help you transfer the domain to them completely.

If you prefer you can transfer right away as well, but then you’ll only be able to bring your site back online once the transfer is completed, which typically takes about a week.

    The name servers, ns1.sgp1.siteground.asia
    ns2.sgp1.siteground.asia

I would like to do the transfer once the site is already online.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks. I’ve added those.

Please give them around hours to update, and then you can start the transfer process by following the instructions here:

Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

    Noted. Thanks a lot.

  • Your domain’s name servers are now propagated, so it should be safe to start the transfer process now without your site having any more downtime.

On the domain transfer screen, please make sure you click the Accept Settings button, and not just the Request Code link. There are a few processes that need to happen in the background to enable a transfer, and if you just request the code those don’t take place so the transfer won’t succeed.

Hi. How many hours does it take before the domain status change? I mean, from private to public?

  • If you click that button on the transfer screen it happens immediately. And I’ve confirmed, your domain is both unlocked and privacy is disabled.

It’s possible the Whois database your new registrar is querying contains cached data and will need to update before it will show the change. That’s not something we control. But privacy is definitely disabled, so please tell that to your new registrar and ask them to double check the status from their end.

I tried doing the transfer but it was denied. So I’ll just try another transfer after 60days?

  • Are you getting a message that the domain is locked? You only mentioned private vs public in your previous reply.

The 60 day lock only applies if you updated any of the contact info on your domain, which you have not done. But it appears our registrar has locked the domain until February 2018. This should not have happened and I’ve emailed them to let them know.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, I don’t think so. The emails I received are the domain status – change notification mail, EPP code, and the registrar transfer denied message.

  • Okay. Our registrar has removed the incorrect lock on your domain, so you should now, finally, be able to transfer it. Please give the code to Siteground again, and this time it should go through.

Okay thanks. I’ll contact SiteGround again about this.
